Women get the vote in Saudi ......

It's not even that, it's an illusion of progress. Saudis can only vote for in effect local councils which have what power exactly anyway? They can't vote for or against the house of Saud/Wahabbi cabal which runs the county, the opulent welfare system to 'royal family' members, the police-state, the oppression against shia. The whole thing is obscene.

dont get me wrong, I still think its a backward sandpit that without oil would still be in the dark ages and has a poisonous belief system. It was just an ironic cut and paste I picked up from elsewhere that I thought was mildly amusing rather than a statement of my position....

All in all it's actually quite a big step forwards.

Not entirely true. They're going to be able to stand for election in these positions, and vote in main elections. They're also going to be eligible for nomination to the Shura council, which although it only has advisory power, is in fact one of the most influential entities in Saudi politics.

How do you define a 'step fwds' BTW? Saudi has the Koran as its constitution? Do you think this is inadequate?
