Only a few weeks since the red arrows crash. Reckon it won't be long until air shows are banned

Dave said he saw a woman with her leg cut off in a video linked from the daily mail! Awfully sad, but I don't want to see such things....

I don't think airshows will be banned, back in 1952, 29 spectators and two crew were killed when a prototype DH 110 crashed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Fa...w_DH.110_crash

Looking at the pics of the P51 Mustang that crashed it seemed to have been quite extensively modified from the original.

Jesus, that is horrific, surprised there werent more fatalities, scary to think if you take kids to something like that and they go mooching off then that happens, utterly terrifying. I saw some aftermath footage of the Ukraine crash and that was enough for me to never want to see anything like that again. Would imagien the pilot had a fairly swift exit from this world, probably 300 mph at about 80 degrees, almost self burying.

Always wondered about the Red Bull air races, and as long as there are airshows there will always be crashes, you get pilots putting planes through their paces whilst people watch then it raises the bar in terms of density of the people on the ground and the chances of something going wrong, dont think they shouldbe banned as on balance I think most people enjoy them and dont get killed, we can ban everything and then die of boredom.

My ex boss had a P51 Mustang, he use to take employees up in it once a year for charity donations, i went up once, unbelievable is an understatement, there the most powerfull piston engined planes made, the heat in them is unbearable, as the passenger seat is on top of an oil cooler.

It was a sad loss when he was killed in one of his other planes a WW2 Sea Fury.

BBC news just said this was the fifth pilot to die at the Reno races in four years.

Surely there is a f**king big clue that this may not be the safest thing!

There are photos on the LA Times website that seem to show no pilot in the cockpit?

Given how cramped it is in there you have to wonder if the pilot has passed out before impact!!

Empty cockpit

Taking off - pilot clearly seen

His belts/harnesses would have kept him upright even if he'd passed out.

Photoshopped IMO

There are several photos all showing the same thing.

Occam's Razor applies - why would you photoshop the pilot out?

That first picture in the link isn't taken just before impact.

Well the plane is pointing at the ground and quite low?

However unless you know we are both speculating!

Look at how the picture is taken, perfectly level to the plane.
When you look at the video and see how quick the plane was going as it hit the ground that camera must have the most amazing shutter speed to get that high quality shot from such a high moving subject.

That's assuming the photographer could pan the shot with the plane, and get the shot a millisecond before it hit the ground.

Looks much more like they've got a picture of the plane when stationary on the ground, changed the angle to look like it's on an extreme glideslope, and photoshopped out the landing carriage. (rather than photoshopping the pilot out)

IMO of course.

If it's real then it is one of the most amazing pictures ever taken, to get such a high quality photo in a split second, involving extreme angles.

There was certainly something wrong with the plane, as it's rear landing (taxi) wheel is down, and it should be retracted with the main gear.

I thought tailwheels on warbirds were notorious for dropping down in high G situations..just a thought as it's not really my area of expertise...

Anyway - the point I was trying to make is that there are lots of pics showing an empty cockpit (and a rear wheel down).

The evidence would seem to be there.
