Buying a used item.......would you?
Specifically a camera.
There are loads on e-bay, obviously uprate junkies, but they come with no warranty, obviously. They go for around 2/3 the price of a new one.
Some are JUST the camera, no battery charger, leads, etc, so could even be stolen?
Anyone had any experience of buying a second hand COMACT digital camera, good or bad?
TIA

A lot of people just don't give a crap and lose the box/leads and even the charger sometimes. Thing is I would worry how well the camera itself has been looked after in these cases.
If you are worried abiut the stolen issue ask for the serial number and email the manufacturer.... if it is registered as stolen they will tell you, if not then no worries. If the seller won't give you the serial number then buyer beware.
All in my opinion of course!
When I was looking for a secondhand D2X as a back up to my main camera I would not even think about bidding on any that were missing the body cap, charger or even the sync covers etc. To me that means they have not looked after the camera.

If it is all complete as above then it may well be worth it bearing in mind that you have to trust the word of the seller. I think his feedback is a good indication of his reliability of course. If you use Paypal or a credit card then you have protection of course.

I got my camera 2nd hand granted it was from spazzy on here, but f1 advice seems spot on.
Isn't there any forums for photography (not SN) they should have a used section there would be my first port of call.

If someone doesn't give a crap about their stuff then I wouldn't want to buy anything from the. For example, I'd walk away from a car I had doubts about if the owners house was a pigsty.
Buying anything 2nd hand online can be tricky and risky. However, there are plenty of genuine people out there who have looked after their stuff, used it as intended, enjoyed it while they had it and are now moving on to bigger and better things (i.e. upgrading, got bored, etc). This is particularly the case with something like cameras.
I've spend about £1000 on my set up and if I had the spare money I'd probably look to go to the next stage. That means my well looked after kit would be on the 2nd hand market and anyone buying it would not be disappointed.
That said, I seldom come across people in life that actually look after their things.

What people will pay on e-bay is beyond my understanding.
I've watched stuff go for more second hand, and a high P&P charge too, than he could have had it new with free P&P.
Just beyond me.
I agree with the comments about lost parts, I'd be careful there too, but not much to lose on a compact.
Losing things like leads and the CD of instructions and software, well I suppose it depends if they ever used them?
On my D300, for example, the CF card goes into the computer's card reader. I still HAVE the lead, but don't use it.

I have just bought a Nikon DSLR 3100. It's the entry level, and shockingly they are selling for more second hand on eBay for what you can get brand new!
I'm hoping to start having some fun with this camera. I will be getting the tripod out of the loft I think!
As for buying a second hand camera, just make sure the feedback is good, and make sure everything you need is there, or you at least price up the stuff you will need to get it all set up and working.
No point grabbing a bargain if the little extras you need will cost a bomb.

The problem for boobies with TP is they need 100 posts before they can view the classifieds. Worth sticking with though as it's a veritable goldmine once you can access it

Panasonic Lumix TZ range maybe a TZ 8, TZ10 TZ18, (TZ19?), or might save up and get the TZ20.
But the TZ 20 seems the same as the TZ18 except for better video peerformance, and a touch screen.
There's a guy on e-bay selling them imported from the states, MUCH cheaper than list/discount.
