Where are you staying?
I'd suggest you may want to travel a little further for some nice places to go.
Nice villages just outside......but the town centre is a hole.

Staying at the Oak House hotel, all pre-booked by work as it came recommended by the place where I'll be going while I'm there.
So best bet is to get so drunk as I don't care what the place is like.

I lived there for 25 years,
its not the greatest place in the world, but,
i would recommend either the Redwell in town , no music, can be busy late innthe week, cheap drinks. or the cutting room, again, they do food and beer is fairly cheap.
Further out of the town is the priory or the Och n Dough pub, both have good foor and beer.
have fun

Coach and Horses is the best pub in town (voted best pub in the county by CAMRA no less!), close to the Morrisons, avoid the Redwell unless you like Wetherspoons pubs that are filled with no-toothed weirdos.
