Shift work

Shift work
I have worked days for the last 12 years and it is only recently I have started shift work. The shifts are 4-12, 12-8,8-4. The shifts that are killing me are the night shift, I finish at 4 get home and sleep a few hours, then spend the rest of the day awake.
Any tips on how to sleep during the day that does not involve a bottle of Jack daniels?

Everyones different, I have music on quite loud as I sleep better with constant noise rather than the occasional loud car or lorry driving past, the louder the better, when I lived with my parents my mum had to wait until I had dropped off then she would turn it down as it drowned out the tele in the living room
I also have an air con unit and a fan for the odd hot day we have, it was a Tuesday this year
Or you could just try working harder then you would sleep on a galloping hedgehog

Is that a rolling shift pattern? If so it is very hard because you cannot have your body clock adjust, you are always out of whack.
I do night shifts sometimes with my job, but it is always night shift if I am doing night shift. I might stay on in for a week or 4 weeks so I can adjust.
I find the main thing with trying to sleep is to just kind of be stoic about how tough it is and not expect a good nights sleep. If you try and fight it you don't sleep.

I work 7-2, 2-9, 9-7 and weekends I work 7-7 I only do nights every 4 weeks, I don't mind nights though I generally treat nights like days, just come home have something to eat watch tv etc and generally go bed about 11-12 get up around 5-6ish. Alot of my colleagues go to the gym straight after nights as they say the workout helps them sleep.

When I was at Uni I needed to work in holidays of course. Ended up doing night shift, 10pm to 6am Mon-Thurs then Fri was noon to 8pm! I just fell asleep when I got home (6.30am) & woke up about 2pm get blackout curtains perhaps?

I can see that will be pretty difficult for you if the shifts change all the time.
We used to have a similar problem when operating the VC10, the constant clock changes when travelling to different parts of the world was a killer...we were always tired. Just had to accept it and cope.

I worked shifts for several years, i never got used to nights, two weeks on two weeks off. Tne two weeks on nights used to nearly kill me as i have never been able to sleep during the day for more than a couple of hours. It suits some people and not others.
Not much help I'm afraid!

I work 2 days 07.00 - 19.00 then 2 nights 19.00 - 07.00 and then 6 off and I`m permanently tired, however well I sleep. Been that way for 13 years. You never get used to it, you just adapt to it. Ear plugs are a must for sleeping through the day and most importantly (for me) a good blackout blind.

I worked nights at my last job for 3 1/2 years and generally slept ok. If I did awake early then I'd go for a snooze before work. Found for some reason when tired at work, swallowing hard when you're about to yawn helped me... dunno why.
I would prefer to work permanent nights than 6-2 earlys 2-10 lates and 10-6 nights rotating. Hated 6-2 2-10 as I'd clock watch 6-2 and sleep too much 2-10.

I guess its the 8-4 shift thats the struggle.
1. Dont eat after 2am, and when you get home in the morning, go straight to bed, dont have a coffee or any food.
2. Blackout curtains
3. If you go to bed at 5am and wake up at 11am, try and get an hour later in the day.
4. If possible, try and get 30 minutes sleep at work. Not always possible i know. I used to do 6pm to 6am nights. Where possible i used to get a good hours kip around 3.30 am, made loads of difference.
