Clare's Law

That seems obvious enough to you and me, as objective bystanders, but if you believe the research on this sort of thing, it's often not until months into a relationship that the serial batterer types start showing their true colours, by which time the other party's good judgement is bound to be a bit clouded.

I think some women may use this (if it was introduced) as some sort of vetting proceedure, but tbh, I think most normal women wouldn't. As sort of said, a woman may be swept off her feet so to speak/charmed, and loving the attention, the last consideration is whether the man she is entering into a relationship with has a history of violence.
Even if passed, I think the majority of women wouldn't make use of it straight away. Down the line...it may already be too late.

Totally agree, whats the harm in someone doing a check to see if you have been violent ?
Personally, I think any crimes that have caused hurt to others, be that physical, financial or emotional should be viewable to the public under certain circumstances.
If you don't want to be on the list, don't do the crime

Do we really need this?.... no, not at all. It's another erosion of our privacy neatly concealed within a political web designed on the back of a recent relationship horror story.
Who in their right mind would ever meet someone and actually think... "hey, I'd better just run a background check... just in case" - seriously!
And it's not foolproof as it only catches serial offenders, and I'd hazard a guess that the majority of serious incidents are first offence (well first time reported) type events anyway.
This is political vote winning - nothing more, nothing less.

If a new girlfriend did any checks on me, I'd kick the **** out of her.
Only joking. Would never raise my hand to a woman.
I normally just slap them round the face with my ****.

So why does being in a 'relationship' give you the right to do that check? Why not just open to the public info and data on anyone? I mean if you have nothing to hide after all?

Well what a relief it will be when they can publish everything about a person's life and status on a website so that our entire character can be laid bare for the world to know!
Even all about bank accounts and debts etc. and one's calculated ability to pay of course.
Of course information gleaned from friends and neighbours could also be published!

I reckon if you asked a cross-section of women, you'd get a vastly different result to what you're expecting. Like all "erosions of privacy" - your privacy is entirely intact unless you're a wrong'un.

If I befriend a person of a religion which may be associated with Terrorism can I check that they are not a Terrorist?
The whole idea of this Clare's law is absurd. It's just pure emotionalism which is driving it with her Dad is no doubt driven by guilt for bringing her up to be attracted to an abusive bloke.

Tony sorry but with respect, that's crap. I know two women personally who are involved in abusive relationships and to suggest they were brought up to be attracted to abusive blokes is properly absurd.
People on here need to know more about the subject before making vacuous comments.

What else keeps them in a relationship then with an abusive person?
