what would you be looking for at the back? id considered saying id do it on the condition that we take it to a watch specialist to verify its genuine?

I had a google and it has a solid back, not a showcase. So would need to be opened up.

Workings should be an ETA 2894-2 derived movement or maybe an ETA 2892 (which the 2894 is based on). Tag call this their cabibre 17 (or 12 for the 2892 ).

It looks like there are that many different styles of the monaco. The closest I could find is a CW2114, but the face is the wrong colour (brown instead of black).

Unfortunately, on my travels I tripped across this: http://www.replica-panerai.net/tag-h...17-p-1728.html

So yes, fakes are out there.

I don't know if there is a number you could ring Tag on to confirm serial numbers, failing that its a trip to an authorised dealer who is willing to authenticate it.

Certainly worth getting a professional to check it I'd say.

There's quite a few on ebay at the moment. Not the same model but part of the same range, so that should give you an idea of the real market value if the auction ends with a winning bidder:

most recent one about to finish: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TAG-HEUER-MONA...item3f0b7ebd61

worth watching this too: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TAG-HEUER-MONA...item33693c7677

It will cost a few £100 to get it opened up and looked at, as it will need pressure testing and sealing etc to guarentee the movement. However,if it's a fake they will probably know if it's fake just by looking at it.

If your seller is serious then you shouldn't have any problem.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TAG-HEUER-MONA...d=246934901190

have you noticed that on this one the background on the date is black, yet on the others its white??

ive been told just to put a splash of water on the face, if it runs off its fake and if it gathers up its real, something to do with the face?

Never head of that one.

I suppose its something to do with it being sapphire crystal or anti-reflective coatings. Problem is some genuine watches don't have that....for example my old Breitling is Acrylic!

edit: And if its been tarted up with jewelers rouge it may behave differently too.
