Workplace Parking Levy
I'm sitting here reading this pamphlet from Nottingham City Council in stunned disbelief.
It details, in a lovely friendly informative way how employers who provide more than 10 parking spaces for employees, regular contractors etc will have to pay £279 next year, £322 in 2013, and £364 in 2014 PER SPACE.
The pamphlet is written on lovely grass green and sky blue pages, presumably to enforce how they're caring for the environment... but hidden in the pages are lines like: Civil Contravention and Criminal Offences where they explain in lovely friendly type:
Delightful
There's also very informative pages on how the employers can pass the charges onto their employees and how the employees can save money using the salary sacrifice scheme....
Use you car to go to work? Your VED just increased....

One big parking space, outlined with yellow lines and a disabled emblem on it. Put all the cars in and you're away!
Who's to say that the cars are employees anyway? I've parked in a city school car park and walked to my job in town on a few occasions.

Why are things like this still being allowed to happen?
This was proposed under the previous governemnt and is clearly another tax that will ultimately stifle business and growth.
Cameron told us things like this would not be happening and yet here we are... same ****, different government!

Is this just Nottingham or is it going to go countrywide? I had heard they were going to start doing this, using the Green bandwagon, to make it even more expensive to commute to work by car.
Me - twenty miles away, no buses, train is at silly times, they won't take bikes, etc.
If they start that here then work will have to carry the cost as most of us are over ten miles away.

shocking! just what we need to get working Britain going again, a made up tax on companies. Shame on you Nottingham, shame.
I hope business looking to invest in Nottingham get to know this and vote with their wallets.

Yeah, they have been threatening to do it in Nottingham for years, hence lots of businesses moved out many years ago.
I think businesses will have to look into setting up another company to own the land that employees park their cars on. That way the employees will be parking on land owned by a different company, and therefore the space has not been provided for by their employer.

They are really REALLY anti car council that have for many years made it harder to get a car into work on a morning. Thats why my employer left the city centre, we just had no choice other than to leave as even our customers were starting to complain at the length of time it was taking to get to us.

Cameron is very fond of saying that small businesses will be the saviour of the economy, yet if he allows councils and authorities like ATVOD (another issue btw) to do as they please then his words are no more than hollow empty rhetoric

From their website, they suggest reducing the number of liable parking places as a solution to reducing the bill!
For most of the people I work with, public transport is not viable for both financial and journey time reasons.

Free travel planning and parking management advice and assistance is available from the Council to assist employers in reducing their liability to the charge by reducing the number of liable parking places they provide.

That's just it though, the government needs to tell the councils they cannot do things like this.

it will come back to kick them in the ****, maybe not instantly, but as soon as leases run out companys will move out fo the city to save money, reducing how much the council gets.

I am totally amazed that this practice is even legal. After all, if you own the land which you are allowing your staff to park on how can they suddenly decide to require you to license the parking you provide.

I wonder what Boots will do now? they said a couple of years ago ‘We will be seeking to challenge this decision, and we are calling for an immediate public inquiry.’

Seems like one of those situations where something gets mercilessly spanked for every possible penny, short term it works and it brings money in but people dont like being victimised like that so they make other arrangements and guess what they loose money, key thing with any economic thing is to keep the market stable, i.e. dont sell to cheap or oversupply and dont make things too expensive, keep it just the right side where people dont seek an alternative.
But then, councils, when did good sense come into it, I can see their point about use of cars to a certain extent though, town centres are gridlocked with people too lazy or to unimaginative to work out another method of getting about without a 2.5 tonne off roader involved for one person, then moan that its expensive.

What's more is they will be charging the Fire service, Police force and Teachers to park. So, who's budget is that coming out of if they don't pass the charges on? They're all run by the city council!
