Best route from Hull will be the M62, then A1M all the way.
Depends how many miles you'll get to a tank to guess cost. I get 200miles, and use V-Power, so I'd fill up twice probably, but still have plenty left when you got to Scotland. So budget for 2 fill up's at £65 each.

The A68 route (which you may as well do as there is a dearth of dual-carriageways in that part of the country) is 250 miles.
You will want to do the M62 to the A1 and just sit in the inside land hoping for a tailwind. It's dual carriagway the moment you are in Hull (A63) so you'll have a long stretch of cruising to lull you into a false sense of security which will last until Newcastle.
Good luck after that.

Use the Live Traffic feature on the TomTom website and it will not only tell you time & distance but also where to expect traffic delays.

Google Maps says 263 miles via M62 and A1. You could almost certainly knock some miles off that if you took A1079 via York, or A68 via Jedburgh, but both these would add a chunk of time to the journey.

I would go via the A1, A69, M6 and A702 - probably not the shortest route but travelling from Cambs to Edinburgh it's almost certainly the quickest (I hate the A1 north of Newcastle with a passion!). The A69 is a lovely road but maybe I've been lucky as I never seem to hit too much traffic on it.

Clocked the difference with my mate once. Set off at the same time, he did A1 I did A68 and we met up at Scotch Corner services. Arrived at the same time, I'd done 20 mile less though and I wasn't spanking it.
There is no need to boot and brake on that road, some tight corners, better staying sensible and ripping round them than flying up, braking too much had having to bury the right foot again!
