Question Receiving paypal payment from Pistonhead sale...advice.....

Potentially sold Wifey's HTC on Pistonheads.
In an attempt to ensure that the money stays in MY possession after payment is received, is there a tried/tested method for doing so?

Needless to say, the phone WILL be sent off etc.

Once I have notification of news funds, surely if I take them out/transfer to my bank, and then remove any bank details from the account, that's it.

Yes?

No?

Just an attempt to not get scammed! Don't think this is the case, but I'm cautious.

How do you lot do it?

i dont think you can take the money out straight away just make sure you send it recorded signed for to the address on his paypal account as i let the buyer pick up my i-phone and then he said someone stole his credit card and i had to pay the money back as i hadnt followed paypal security

Hey Dan,

I take it you've spoken to/met the buyer. Paypal is a fave scammers method of defrauding folk, albeit usually the buyer is the scammer.

'Buyer' can do a 'Charge Back', even if you have transfered the cash to your bank account. A charge back can be done at anytime up to a year from original transaction. I'm surprised Paypal can even let this happen!
I've been done by this method at least twice. I wont accept Paypal anymore for transactions.

Paypal cant take money out of your bank without your permission, that would be theft.

If you leave it in your paypal account they can use it.

But they still need a CCJ to force you to pay up - if you've done nothing wrong and been scammed I doubt very much a judge would rule against you.

Thats true, they cant take cash from your bank account.

Even if your Paypal account is zero, they can still do a chargeback - leaving your account minus ££££'s

It's academic now, as the "buyer" is seems to be a time-waster.

I knew my "awoooga" alarm went off for a reason.
He'd asked for my paypal address - but surely even if he managed to hack my account, I've taken off all of my cards/accounts and there's nothing in Paypal anyway.

Might change my password anyway - just to be on the safe side!

Payment by BACS is the preferred method.

Just double check once you give your A/C details over that they haven't gone to a branch to pay in a cheque (which could bounce / be recalled)

Are you sure?

You didn't used to have to register your bank details with them, you do now. I suspect their T&Cs that you sign up to let them do just that!

Paypal are not stupid, it's just that they are trying to protect the buyer without actually witnessing the sale? which is just wrong and is very easy to abuse.

You can buy something off ebay, receive it and tell ebay and paypal that you've got sent the wrong item and that the seller is trying to scam you. Paypal will refund you the money and persue this with the seller ( by taking money out of his account ).

But on the other hand if that WAS the actual case, you do want to get money back dont you ?

Slightly off topic but still on topic of paypal,a friend at work has this going on at the minute

he sold some stuff on ebay, only opened paypal as ebay needs it etc,so once all items sold,he transfered the £ into his bank, then closed his paypal account.(removing bank account and card details) funnily enough he then lost his card so had to cancel it.

then a few days later,a buyer opened a dispute, not as described etc,but my mate couldnt reply as his paypal account is closed.
the dispute ended in buyers favour as my mate couldnt reply (classed as non responsive)

so,wonder what will happen ????

Not sure but check out the link above. PayPal never delete your details, even if you close your account. That's why I refuse to give them mine in the first place.

I got scammed on ebay, the buyer left + feedback then put in a claim 6 weeks later claiming the item was not as described and paypal ruled in his favour.
The cheeky ****** even messaged me thanking me for the camera and offered to give me a good deal on selling it back to me. I forwarded the message on to paypal but they did not give a toss. It took 2 years of letters from debt collectors before they eventually gave up.

Get a cheque or even a post office money order and bank it then release the goods via recorded signed for. Paypal is a waste of time and offers you little if no protection whatsoever.
