YIKES its a political thread. Tin hats at the ready......
Looks like fuel tax will be frozen, stamp duty on houses to go up, cigarettes and drink tax expected to go up, NI contributions to go up by 1% and the worst one, VAT to go up to be in line with the rest of the EU, around 19%.
Great. Oh well, IF it means the health service gets a cash injection then it cant be too bad.

Think hes got the correct essence there now though
I complete on Friday. Wot rumours have been heard about Stamp Duty. Cant see how they can get away with touching it. Theyve left the thresholds where they are for so long it affects far more people than ever before, and with house price rises they're making hand over fist on it already.
Added up the Tax bill for moving the other day, Stamp Duty, VAT on Estate Agent fees, vat on solicitors fees, etc etc. The I wished I hadn't

deano,
there are loads (as always) of rumours on stamp- mainly around the 250k + houses. the good rumours are things like houses of 270 paying 1% upto 250k then 3% on the next 20k as opposed to now where a £251k house is all at 3% and a 249k house is all at 1%.
but bad rumours are up the 3% cause if you can afford £250 you can afford more tax (it will also slow the house market)

Its the NI thing that gets me. They call it something different so they can raise it when they promised not to raise Tax. - I'm sure I will be corrected but I had understood NI was earmarked for things like Pension and benefits (which people beyond the NI limit - tend not to use anyway 'cos they have their own provision) So how can they divert it to the NHS ?. If its all one big pot of cash, abolish the name "NI" and just call it Tax. Make it clearer for everyone that would.
BBC played a clip of Brown and Blair talking about not raising income tax at the last election. When asked about NI. there was alot of furious pencil twiddling and shifty looks going on.
Politicians - string them all up.

Mrs Tiggs "can we get some curtains for our new house"
Mr Tiggs "errrrr.....no, i had to pay gordon £8,000 to let me buy the house that i purchase with my taxed income from an esate agent who charged me vat and that one day i will leave to my kids who will lose 40% of its value to Gordon's replacement in Inheritance Tax"
Mrs Tiggs "thats a no then?"

Tiggs, this might not help as it depends on your circumstances and how you get on with the person selling the house you want, but a snippet from the Daily Telegraph Money pages might interest you (and others).
It suggests a way round the 250K hike barrier by saying you're only paying 250K for the house and the rest on fixtures and fittings:
<telegraph>
Simon Jones, a director of mortgage specialists Savills Private Finance, explained: "If you were to pay £260,000 for the property, the Stamp Duty bill would be £7,800, but if you pay £10,000 for furnishings and £250,000 for the property, then the Stamp Duty bill falls to £2,500.
"However, care needs to be taken for the figures to remain acceptable or the transaction could be queried by the Inland Revenue. For example, an amount of more than £10,000 for furnishings is likely to stand out.
"It would be wise to draw up a list or schedule of the furnishings concerned in case the transaction is queried."
"Given the risks entailed, no action should be taken without obtaining professional advice."
</telegraph>
Cheers,
Steve

Usual effing story - tax tax tax !!!
Why not give boat loads of taxpayers money to the people that put sod all back into this country and tax the hell out of the people who do put money into this country !!!
It ain't gonna work !!
So many Tory bashers whinge on about what the Tories did back in the 80's etc.. but don't remember how much worse the Labour toilets were before them !! Tax and spend - ouch !! We're heading that way again !!
Whatever your political bias - at the end of the day, for peeps like you and me, we are worse off and see nowt for it !! That pi55es me off !!
Oh.. and "to fund the NHS" is a great label to put on it to make people think its a good idea. B4st4rds !!
Can anyone think of something they have made better in the last 5 years ? Didn't think so !!
rant off...
