The Budget thread
Well it's that day today, let's see your predictions/comments on what's happening/happened, are the right taxes being increased or are we getting ripped off again with no real help to the working people.

Rumour is he'll combine income tax and NI into one. That'll mean a) things will be simpler for all (yes, it'll cause problems for those that don't pay NI at the moment but you'd hope he'll have all the "caveats" covered!!) and b) Labour won't then be able to claim to be keeping income tax rates the same but at the same time putting up NI. Two birds with one stone ....
And of course, referring to the title, he'll abolish VAT on Impreza rain tyres for those with gold wheels and knock links ....

Three to Four pence rise per pint for beers and cider, which will be swiftly followed by the breweries/pubs putting the price up by at least 5p a pint, then moaning that no-one goes out drinking anymore and too many pubs are closing down.

Between 2008-11 the number of pubs in the UK rose by 720.

That would make sense but he daren't do that at the moment as the taxpayer would be reminded that he/she actually pays 32% (income + NI) tax and it would just rub salt into the wound. NI is not generally viewed as a tax like income tax which, of course, is exactly what it is

As for combining taxes, its a nice thought (especially for me as I'm a payroll manager and pay 1300 staff a month) but in reality it would take years to make the tranistion from the current paye system that we have used since the 30's.
Also if this change was brought it it opens the door for other taxes like council tax etc to be deducted from salaries and centralise all taxes, you could end up with 50% tax!

Some of us pay 42% income tax on everything not just bits of it, oh yeah then we have to pay for insurance against losing our job, going into a nursing home, retirement, reunification and some other crap equating to around 48% deductions each month. Oh yeah did I also mention our petrol is dearer than yours aswell, not to mention our TV licence. We also do not have an NHS so have to pay private health insurance. So you lot really need to learn to stop whinging!
Oh yeah and I had to pay 51% tax on the stock options I cashed in last year.

Can't believe the swines are increasing the PA but dropping the threshold for higher rate tax. £43k is not a high amount these days, it's typically high average actually.
£6,475 + £37.4k = £43,875 (FY10/11 rate)
£7,475 + £35k = £42,475 (FY11/12 rate)
What they have given with 1 hand they have taken away and more with the other
Rumours are he will increase it to £8,075 in April 2012 and not adjust the £35k, whoopty fu*kin doo, still worse of to where we are currently

I am in Tax class one as a single person and that means I pay the highest rate of tax which is 42% on every cent I earn, the tax here is not tiered like in the UK, and I earn alot less than 50k GBP year.
The grass is not always greener on the other side. I was gobsmacked at how much tax and insurance I have to pay over here, not to mention other stuff aswell.
I also got my first payrise in 5 years last month and it was nothing to write home about.
