Default Taxing my car: MoT and insurance?

My tax is up at the end of April. If I go in to the Post Office to tax it, will they accept the MoT certificate even though it runs out on 11th May?

I've been refused once before because of somehting to do with the MoT running out soon after I taxed it, but can't remember what the rule was.

I'll have renewed, or replaced my insurance by then, so should be no probs there.

I've been in the same situation quite recently, had 2 weeks or just under left on the old MOT, and got the new tax-disc no problem. Might look a bit more convincing if you buy a whole year's rather than 6 months though.

For a current disc it needs to be in force on the day in question and nothing more. If youre buying ahead - say from May 1st, on the 21st of April, then the MOT needs to be in-force on the first day that the licence is valid. If it runs out on April the 30th, then it cant be used; if it runs out on May the 2nd, then it can be, and whether you buy six months or one years RFL doesnt make any difference.

This info is spot on from my own experience - i have to say it is quite painless to do it on line or by phone rather than the palaver of going to a PO

Do it online as the Post Office will no doubt add a 5% orice increase to the tax and then sell you some expensive stamps.

You can tax it if the MOT is in date. End of story.

It's got nothing to do with the Post Office person serving you.

Been there, done that.

So much for the scare stories about £80 fines if you are a day over

I think I'll file those with "TV Detector vans".

Not strictly true.

I couldn't tax one of my vehicles online because the insurance ran out 2 days before tax renewal date and the computer came back and said the vehicle wasn't insured.

I just took the paperwork to the Post Office where they missed this detail and I came out with new tax. Then I re-insured the vehicle at my leisure without having to rush it to get tax soon after.

As long as it's all insured and MOT when the tax is due to start it is valid. Your insurance was going to be out, so that's fair enough.

Yeah, fair comment. However, the humans at Post Offices don't always check dates was also my point.

My "landlady" forgot to tax her "Sainsbury's Tractor" at the end of last month and has just received a pleasant reminder...

No reason why they shouldn't, just renewed mine which runs out end of March and the MOT on 11 April. They might just remind you that it is getting close.
