Default Any sparkies ? Quick question

Before I blow myself up

Need to change the light in the kitchen. One done already but this one has me foxed

I know that black goes to blue
I know that brown goes to red
Earth simple

But this is obviously a spur or something and has a lot more cables than I am used to.

Picture show existing fitting

I need to attach an earth, a neutral and a live to my fitting.
Help !!!

If you look at that pic, it's obvious:

Your light fitting NEUTRAL goes to the BLACK wires.
Y L F LIVE goes to the BLUE wire on it's own.
YLF EARTH goes to green and yellow.

The reds need to be linked together, as do the pinkish one and the yellow one.

Still not working. I have fed the blue wire from the light fitting to the bank of black wires (as the old one did that )

All reds together

Brown wire from fitting into blue wire from circuit (as the old one did)

Earth connected

Nothing, now both lights dont work !!

If you are using a spur, it should indicate Live In, Live Out, Neutral In, Neutral Out, Earth in and Earth Out.

If that is the case, then (using modern 3 core) brown is live, take it from Live out to Live on your fitting. Blue will be Neutral, take it from Neutral out and feed it to N in the fitting, and obviously, the yellow/green Earth should go from the spurs Earth out to Earth on the fitting.

Lol, sorry but stuff like this does make me chuckle. you wouldn't service your own gas boiler would you ? i have seen so many fires start because of people playing with their own electrics. if you don't understand it don't play with it...

Yes im an electrician.... in case you were wondering.

Ill now duck for cover before the abuse comes... but you must understand my point as i have seen the backlash of people doing there own installations ..

Get your test light screwdriver on it....see which live is permananet which one is switched.

One of those at a guess feed the light switch, then goes back to the ceiling rose to power the light.

Which colour? Anyones guess.

But Blacks; look like neutral from the consumer unit and feeding other celing roses.

Reds should be permanent live (feed to the light switch and other ceiling roses ).

Yellow, umm...is its a two way switch? If so, should be the common feed going between the light switches

Blue = Neutral OR Second switch live for a two ways switch (hence the need to get the test light out). In this case its a switched live.

Yellow/green sheathing over bare copper = earth

Exactly... what makes it even more dangerous is for all we know from seeing that picture the additional cable could go anywhere into a junction box ... who knows... ? so trying to advise how you think it should be connected could cause him even more problems.

Anyway rant over...

I'd run a bus bar to provide the power, at the fitting I'd wire blue to N, green/yellow to E, and brown to L1, black to L2 in an emergency or connector block if not an emergency light, grey would go to the connector block (both black and brown should have brown sleeving on to indicate they are both live). For the fourth light in the loop I'd switch brown and grey. Hope that helps

Don't forget you will need two 16amp fuses when using an emergency bus bar plug.

Get a meter on them to identify which wires are live ,neutral switched live etc. You have a neutral from the 3 core returning to the live on the light pendant that should have a switched live identifier on it.

Jesus I am so out of my depth here, I hate bloody electrics

Okay layout so far. Kitchen light switch has two switches on it. Inside it has two red cables, one blue cable and one yellow.

Two light fittings in the kitchen, obviously one spurs to the other.

Other light fitting is fine

This one has four red cables coming out of the ceiling. Three are joined together into a metal block. These are joined together in the same metal block and I have taped them so they dont touch any metal
The remaining red cable joins into a plastic block with the yellow

Three black cables are joined into a metal block which in turn join the blue cable from the light fitting. Again they are taped off so not to touch any metal of the fitting

One blue cable on its own is joined into the brown connection on the light fitting.

Earth connected together

Am I doing this right ?

I'd get the whole place re-wired to meet the current Part P regs

I'd be tempted to put the rose back and relocate it to the joist in the ceiling void above (presuming you can get the floorboads up in the room above). Then run the usual three wires from that to the new light fitting.

Saves trying to cram all those wires in the new light fitting (as there is rarely enough room as most modern fitting are designed for EU wiring layouts not our batty looped layouts).

Dont worry, 2011 xmas decoration plans have been severely scaled down to just a small 6" tree and a light bulb on the window ledge

Yes that is right folks, Swiss has done it. Took the whole lot apart, started from scratch and for some reason ( I call it a fluke), it now just works. Nothing different from last time. Well okay maybe I used a bit extra electrical tape, who knows

And the best bit, I am still alive

Now who would like to hear my story about me doing the ensuite bathroom and the taps saga from last weekend ?
