DJ's are sheer fruits these days
Went down to my mates the other night who DJ's in quite a few clubs in NI and also does a few radio shows.
As I haven't went to clubs or anything in the past few years, I was totally blown away by what passes as a DJ now! They are criminally ****!
Now in 2011, what you do to DJ in a club is bring your LAPTOP, plug it in and begin whilst wearing a set of Beats by Dr Dre around your neck and never once move them from that position. What a pile of tanned *******.
Why would you pay to see something play with there laptop?

It is shocking! when I started it was 1200's or 1210's with little or no monitoring or better still the mc coming through the monitors and you had to perform! There was a story about madonas ex Jesus who got caught out while charging 10k a set his was seen puting on a mixed cd and pretending to mix live!!!
Let me at em I'll mix/scratch/crab and cut em out of the room!

Always makes me wonder what would happen on a night out if the DJ's laptop goes for a burton. Night over unless they know what they are doing around turntables and have access to records there and then.

Mixing on 1200s or 1210s was great in it's day and I was a vinyl purist for as long as possible however once I switched to CDJs I never looked back
The functions/features on a cdj1000 open up many possibilities to be more creative and many djs take advantage of this
Sounds like you've formed your opinion on one night out, don't tarr all djs with the same brush

Well no because I haven't been out to a club in many years, this was the opinion of a very good proper DJ after after watching videos of "local talents" play out I couldn't agree with him more.

After seeing what Serato does for the "DJ", I wouldn't pay to see anyone use it.

I guess you could argue though that it used to be a lot easier to spot a crap dj as there were less cheats available :-)

He has 1210's but like anything technology advances and makes his life easier instead of hauling record boxes everywhere.
He's a hip/hop , r&b dj so likes his samples which serato will store for individual tracks so he dont have to do them again. Not all dj's use them to 'cheat'
I'd be surprised if any of the big dj's didn't use a laptop In someway.
But I do see your point there's a club local that just uses a laptop no sign of deck in sight.

Never been into the VDJ thing, the software does everything for you. I'd only use it if I had the capabilities to exploit the software to maximum effect, i.e. live mashups etc
I'll stick to my CDJ's, 1210 for vinyl and Sennheisers

I've got some 1210's and a DJM600. Got Ableton Live on my laptop, but haven't got a clue how to use it lol. Thought about getting CDJ's or Serato as less and less stuff is being released on vinyl and they're getting harder to find, but I don't have any spare time as it is so not much point in shelling out for them.

for me its been CDJs all the way since being forced to give up vinyl (there arent many clubs that still service their turntables so not much choice initially) I dont think I'd be comfortable walking around clubs with a laptop it's much easier with a cd wallet!

You should of seen the Magnectic Man video of them in the Radio 1 Live Lounge, 3 dudes standing at Laptops and Katie B standing in the corner with a mic. At least they bought in some violinists.

Its a bit depresseing theres software out there to take all the hard work out of DJ'in but atleast when you know youve learnt the hard way you have the skill over the 'pretend' DJ's you see.
