Check the Sky website, they where offering free box if you upgrade to Sky HD ( increased monthly subscription tho )

Or get one off ebay...

Cheapest option with a dead $ky box will be to cancel and get Virgin.

Its possible that $ky may do a free call out and new box when you cancel, but they are wise to the cancellation techniques these days so like to play hard-ball.

Alterantive cheap option is to repair your box yourself, most of the time its a PSU failure. Need to be handy with electronics and a soldering iron though.

Our HD box started playing up badly.

Wouldn't record 2 channels, wouldn't rewind and generally wouldn't do any of the Plus things.

Ours is a Thomson box which was known to have PSU failures. Bought one on an exchange basis off ebay for £35 (minus £10 exchange) easy peasy and just a few screws and a couple of cables.

While I was there I had a spare 500GB Samsung F2 hard drive so put that in while the box was open. Good upgrade from the 320GB.

How old is the Sky box? They're supposed to last a reasonable amount of time and not just the 12 months they provide a warranty for.

I just called Sky and politely told them that my Sky box had died, the initial response from them was that the warranty had expired. I just told them straight, if I haven't got a working Sky box there isn't any point me keeping the Sky TV so I'd have to move my TV, line and internet to BT instead. They offered me a new Sky box on the condition that I committed to another 12 month contract at the same price. Job sorted, went with BT anyway because they're giving my Infinity (37Mb internet)

or you pay the £70 call out fee for the engineer to fix or replace. I honestly believe they dont care if you stay or go.

Just buy a new box and get on with your life ya tight git...

Or upgrade to hd and they will give you a hd box and the sky + features are fantastic.

If your tv goes wrong do you expect the BBC to give you a new one, no, you have and pay for sky each month because you want to watch the programmes.

Or call sky pay £70 and they will put a recon box in for you.

You don't get your TV from the BBc as part of paying your licence fee though do you, so a pretty stupid anology.

O.P. I'd read the small print in your Sky contract and see what it says with regards to warranty of their equipment outside the initial 12 month period. Because that's the difference here... when you sign upto Sky, they provide you with a box in which is deemed suitable to provide their services through... the BBC do not do this, hence my comment above

And no I'm not tight (ok just a little), I just don't have more money than sense and prefer to get value for money with my purchases

Head over to the Sky help forums or the skyuserforum and get an email address for one of the high-level departments. There's been countless people on there who have been contacted within a short space of time to have their problems sorted out

Exactly; why pay to have a new box when other companies like Virgin will replace it for free!?

Yes but you don't own the box so when your sub is up, unlike a sky box you can use as freest SD/HD box.

That's why sky charge you.

As said before don't pay for a box from sky as you can haggle them for free. But 9/10 they're refurbed boxes.

If you're lucky like me I just go to my van and get a new one

Not exactly true: If $ky changes their cards again, the boxes stop working on freesat too; I have collected five $ky and $ky+ boxes with viewing cards...none work as the old style cards have expired - no freeview neit nada. Put the card number into $ky's website and they want £25 for a new freesat card!

Not to forget the $ky+ boxes won't record/playback if you cancel.

Where 99% of Tvs and DVD recorders have freeview anyway, so its a non-issue. But it just takes the p*ss IMO. I won't pay £25 for another card or £10 a month to allow it to record.

(before anyone asks about the boxes; they are all being exported to Spain..they fetch a few bob over there..the expats don't like missing come-dancing/dancing-on-ice ).

I guess it does nt work all the time ,but I have been with them 6 yrs or so and if they dont fix it free ,then I will take my £1000 per year subscription elsewhere to be honest .

Ultimately it is down to them but I dont see the point of paying for a box .If its broke they cant provide their services to you ,so they need to fix/replace to continue supplying you with their services .I dont see how they can expect you to pay for the box .
