Question One for the doctors please - Codeine

Can taking codeine lower the pressure in your lungs???

I was told this was the case by an A&E doc but cannot find anything on the web.

Thanks in advance

One of the side effects is shallow breathing, so I guess so.

I haven't noticed that when I've taken it.

Paul, your question doesn't really make sense.

What pressure are you talking about?

1) If you are talking about pressure within your airways then 100% no

2) Within your lungs there is also blood running. This has a pressure as well, often called pulmonary vascular pressure. If you mean does it lower this pressure then I doubt it very very much (read that as I'm pretty sure it doesn't).

Can you give a little more detail as to what you want to know?

I take 4 x 60mg Codein every day, which I believe is quite a high dose and have never suffered any side effects . I don't recall reading anything similar to what you are saying on any of the warnings that come with them. (Although I've chucked the info leaflets away and just kept the blister packs so can't check).

All opiate pain killers can depress respiration (respiration meaning breathing in this case)..morphine, pethedine, codeine, dihydrocodeine tartrate (DF118), fentanyl.......and the rest.

Not an normal doses though

main side effect at normal dose is constipation !

Ive never heard that before, but im not sure exactly what you mean by pressure.
Codeine supresses coughing too.
