British Touring cars have been pants for years now, sadly.
I prefer a bit of this, there is nothing better than being on the start line with all of them on the rev limiter waiting for the lights to go green what an awesome cacophany of sound
I cant recomend this series enough, forget the first two races of the season as they are a money spinner played out in an empty arabs playground, after that it's full on, I defy anyone not to be impressed with the races from Adelaide onwards and the way these machines are thrown about, especially on the street circuits.

The first GT car was the Lancia Aurelia V6 2.5 litre. It was the car which originated the term "Grand Touring" or "GT".
I used to have one in the early '60's and it was a very pleasant car to drive as well as being pretty fast for those days. The gearbox was a transaxle in between the rear wheels. It was also a good looking machine which still looks attractive today.
My mate and I put an Aurelia engine into a Lotus Eleven and went sports car racing with it! It wasn't bad along the straights but had an inbuilt resistance to going round corners
All good fun at the time though.

I used to follow the BTCC cars back in the late 1980s and early 90s. I'd drive all over the country in my 3-door Cosworth. There was some fantastic racing, and as said above, today's stuff is nowhere near as good. I don't even bother to turn on the TV for it.
My particular favourite was Andy Rouse, and when I was a kid I used to ride around Gloucestershire (on my bike) when he started out jalopy racing

I ran a touring car RS 500 engined Sapphire on the road for a good few years. The most mental bit of fun ever. Having the thing slide sideways accelerating at a ton plus on a damp dual carriageway wasn't right., nor was burning village grass verges when letting off the power
32PSI of boost with a 4000RPM thinking time then all hell broke loose.
In fact, I still own it but the new 'owner', whoever it may be, doesn't know it. I just haven't the heart to take it back as it's supposed original sale was tied up with stolen investments.

Back n the 80s and 90s, Cossies were looked down on the same way Imprezas are today. They went through the same insurance woes. I wish I'd kept both my Cossies, although reliability was not their forte when new...

Driving it on public roads could only be described as dodgy at best. You could end up facing any direction once 4000 RPM was reached if the road surface was anything but bone dry and flat.
As for the sale at the time, well, I 'sold' it to an investment company in lieu of stock. They moved it on to its new owner and ran off with my stock too. I lost a car and money/stock. They got 7 years inside for their trouble.

I have to admit that I was deep in my Imp obsession then, but a test drive in a 300 bhp Cozzeh made me NOT want to swap, halfway round a corner and wallop, then slither, then "Ekk !"
LOL
dunx
P.S. I tried a 4x4 Cozzeh and that was pretty lame compared to an Impreza.

That took me back in so many ways, the touring cars were great but they lost something when the big power stuff went and in came the toned down fwd stuff, remember watching the Cosworths at Silverstone and seeing one lay rubber half way up the straight and being very impressed, it used to be an event, dont even bother watching now.
All the best racing I reckon has more power than grip, the way Tiff was fighting that thing, pure animal, was way better than, Soper, Mike Smith Frank Sytner, Will Hoy, Andy Rouse and all that lot, compelling viewing on a Saturday afternoon, left you drained, it is still pretty close racing now and there are still soem good battles but its just not the same in glued to the road fwd things.

I never owned one unfotunatly, but have been in many Cozzies in my days inc the RS500.
I was very young when these were released but recall helping my dad sticker them up in all sorts of wierd looks, Zebra/Tiger stripes, Chevrons etc... Looked good in the times though.... I vaguely recall stickering up a Rothmans Cosworth too
I was a Mk1 & Mk2 Escort boy at heart....... (still am
