Default Blatant profiteering rip-off b*****ds !!! - VW

One of the faults on our Skoda's was narrowed down to a dodgy fuel temp sensor. VW and Skoda want £72+VAT for the part, and 2 hours to fit it. The Bosch fuel pump used is common in about 80% of diesel cars and the sensor inside can be had for just £14.20 elsewhere, takes just 15 minutes to fit, and is easily a DIY job. So, what was to be the best part of a £300 job, now under £20 ! They even try to stop you DIY'ing by using three of those annoying torx nuts, and one odd triangular nut Fortunately, the triangular one can be removed by lightly tapping a 7mm socket onto it. If they could just wise up and be fair, maybe they'd win back the massive amount of people who DIY or use more honest independents. Only stupid people must go to main dealers for anything.

This is the sort of thing that makes us avoid the 'stealers'. They are cutting off their own noses. I and most folk wouldn't mind paying a fair price to have the work done but to be ripped off that extent!

i stopped going to a Dealer when the service manager looked me in the eye, and with a sharp intake of breath (i though he was going to say my car was a death trap) said my pedal rubber was worn on one side.

Also as they didn't start on my car until the afternoon they called up and apologised and gave me a courtesy car for over night which turned out to be a brand new Beetle. Plus a receipt for the work which shows main dealer service.
Awesome up to the point you had to drive a beetle.. did you leave the little flower in the vase ?

The thing with VAG is all geniuine parts have to come via TPS (Trade Parts Specialists). You have no choice, its TPS or some shoddy knock-off.

They being the only UK source for genuine VAG parts, that means they can fix prices however they please, and alternate parts cross-ref to OEM manufacturers is very restricted.

In fairness not everything is OTT on price. I bought an R32 thermostat for a sensible £25, and a gallon of Quantum screenwash is only £3 too....However I have been stung for £80 on an oxygen sensor

Have you tried sourcing parts directly from Germany? I got an RS Cosworth 3rd gear cog for Redkop from my local ford dealer once and posted it to her which was cheaper and quicker than the dealer in the UK could get it. I don't mind looking up small parts for kraut cars occasionaly if it help. We have most if not all of the main dealers and other parts shops in town.

I'll try and bear that in mind, thanks. Anything to get one over on rip-off Britain.

PS. Just collected the sensor and it's about the size of a paper-clip. It hurt to part with £17 for it, let alone £72.

Its certainly worth considering as TPS have a noose tied tightly around the UK supply of genuine VAG parts.

I guess this is where some eBay shops source their parts from (or chinese copys...unfortunately you won't know until you get it delivered ).

I would find it very difficult to resist going back to the Skoda dealer and telling them what it cost me to do the job and how long, and then mentioning what a rip off they are trying to make.

Collected the part today and it looks like something that falls out of a stapler when you're refilling it Even paying £17.04 with VAT I wanted to vomit at being butt-raped

I have been put off by VW in so many ways. Firstly there is their appalling reliability, well as far as I and everyone I know who has ever had one is concerned, then there is the problem you have mentioned.

I needed something minor done on the suspension, ended up being told it would cost £1500 to replace the shocks, as well as £600 for the ABS to be sported (which might have been true). I told them that I would leave it, sold the car back to the garage I bought it from and will not buy one again.

It's the opposite of Jap cars where everything is bolt on, bolt off ....tons of stuff interchangeable.

What a joke using stupid odd nuts. What is the point except to tie you to a VW dealer and milk you for money!

It was including fitting!?

I know they were taking the mick. I asked for a bit of good will as it was around 8 months out of warranty but they wouldnt budge. Had a 5 year old Ford after that and was so much more reliable and rewarding to drive.
