Mark Wahlberg is set to star in "The Italian Job," a high-octane heist drama that will begin shooting Aug. 3 at Paramount, reports Variety. F. Gary Gray is directing the film scripted by Donna and Wayne Powers.

"The Italian Job" is based on the 1969 heist classic that starred Michael Caine, Benny Hill and Noel Coward. That film was much more of a comedy than the new version will be. While the original was a gold heist set entirely in Europe, the new version will begin in Italy, but with the robbery taking place in Los Angeles.

BMW bought the Mini Cooper and is releasing the first new models of the automobiles in 2003. That's good timing, because the cars will figure prominently in the revamped plot, adds the trade.

Wahlberg will play Charlie Croker, a career criminal who heads the crew that masterminds a massive gold bullion take. It is made possible when they create the largest traffic jam in L.A. history. While that disables the populace, the criminals are empowered by their use of the Mini Coopers, which are incredibly fast but small enough to travel on sidewalks and the subway system while the city and the cops are immobilized.

LOL!

The new mini is a MASSIVE car. There is no way it could get in the places the old mini could and does.

I'm sorry but you cannot remake TIJ sorry. It's the same as Sly remaking Get Carter, it's scarilidge.

Bet they won't even use the proper music in it as well

Got TIJ soundtrack on CD, it's fab, just don't drive around with 'get a bloomin move on' or 'It's caper time" playing, coz you will think you are in a mini racing round turin!

Thumbs down

Forgot to say I'm not in favour of them ruining the IJ. All it will be is a publicity stunt for BMW

Cant see how you can remake somthing that so clearly belongs and typfies a prticular time. The cars the atmospher - Mr Caine, Noel Coward, The minis, the aston, the jag, the miura, the landrover and all those fiats. Superb - any remake is doomed to failure.

Anyone played Italian Job on psx - great fun

Why try to emulate a true classic?

Sure do a movie with a robbery in a trafic jam - but don't even go there if you think your trying to recreate that classic era.

I hope they don't do it.

What we realy need is the original remastered with a 5.1 soundtrack on DVD.

Spen555 is spot on,the new mini is far to fat.

Sounds like another classic movie about to be ruined.

typical hollywood W***kers not an original thought in there addled brains (well the tiny bits of grey matter that rott at the bottom of there oversized head cavity's)
the misses rented "sabrina" this week and i annoyed her all the way through it by pointing out how **** it was compared to the original.
there hasnt been a good original plot driven story out of hollywood for decades.

edited to say surely it should be done with "Smart" cars
