Default How do people make toast?

As title really (poll included). Do the masses toast both sides, or just one?

Not really bothered how well done people like it, but you can add that info if you care enough

Ideally, it would be good to know how people like to make cheese on toast, but I'm not complicating the poll with options for that.

(btw, this is just to possibly settle a little disagreement)

Both, but my toaster begs to differ. (It does one side more that t'other)

Cheese on toast: toast first, add cheese, grill, then add Lea & Perrins.

Right then, when you do the cheese on toast, do you toast one side, turn it over and place cheese onto untoasted side then grill? Just to be sure...

I need to know the exact method

Oh, and this really applies more to people who use a grill to make their toast, as there isn't really very much of an option with a toaster.

Well I was about to say I use the toaster

I stick the toast in the toaster whilst the grill pre-heats (with a plate under it to warm up). By the time the toast pops up, the grill is just about warm enough to stick the toast+cheese under.

edit: Seeing my toaster tends to do one side more, I usually put the cheese on the under-done side, so to avoid burning the edges that has no cheese covering it.

Basically, I make toast in a toaster. For me, a good toast has to toasted both sides properly. My toaster is set on setting 3. Above 3, it turns the toast into charcoal But 3 isn't good enough either, as one side is not fully done for my choice, and not crisp enough to enjoy the crunch. So, once the toast pops up, I push it back in by turning it around, then my mental clock tells me when to pop it up manually.

I make cheese on toast by grating some medium cheddar cheese, and spreading it on top of a toast that has been slightly toasted on setting 3 of the toaster. I also add some fresh spring onion or fresh chive (finely sliced) to grated cheese sometimes, for extra flavour. Anyhow, then what I do is that I put it under my cooker's grill. Then I wait for my mental clock to go ping!!! Once this happens, I take that "cheese on toast" away from the grill, and serve it on a plate with delight. A tiny bit of freshly gound black pepper sprinkled on top of cheese on toast makes it quite delicious. The reason for my cheese on toast to be slightly pre-toasted is that I can not stand a soggy toast from either of the sides. I might as well eat bread as it is, then. But, I don't like bread as it comes. Toasting it is wayyyy better!

Has to be burnt. You can't beat burnt toast

Cheese on toast, I do one side, then lightly do the other side, add the cheese and burn it. Well, not as much as plain old toast

Your toaster does that too?

What is it with toasters that don't do both sides evenly and won't take a full size slice of bread?? I have four that do it (one at work, three at home), one is even a £50 Kenwood
None of them will fully toast a full UK size slice. Seems everything is made to toast that EU sized square slice Bimbo bread

How hard is it to make a toaster that toasts properly

So the consensus so far is people 'do' toast on both sides, at least as well as possible.

I never use a toaster at home (chucked it away) but for the benefit of those who have toaster issues... when I use the one at work now and again, it too toasts the sides unevenly. I have to apply a TH attitude and flip it when needed.

Actually, worse than that (at work) is the stupid bloody thing isn't wide enough to fit a crumpet, muffin or pitta bread in it.

Toast one side lightly in grill, turn over and toast very lightly on that side, add cheese then toast again for 30-60 seconds. (burns very quickly)

But if you make toast on it's own, can I assume you toast both sides?

I know.

They should have heatable wire network inside the toaster covering all areas, not just one wall each side. I don't know why they don't do it at first place. I inspected my toaster a few times, and found that one side is almost uselss in each compartment! I have now developed a habit of looking inside the toaster again and again, just to work out why it is the way it is Not that looking again and again will change anything, I know. However, someone needs to invent an efficent toaster to sort this problem out.

I believe that toasters toast one side more than the other to 'toast' bagels correctly.

Toast both sides. Has to be brown (not just warm bread, like Mr OS does it ). On the Aga. Best toast EVER! Cheese on toast has to be toasted one side, then lightly on the other, then add cheese.

Lightly butter one side and grill for a few secs to go crispy, flip, smear some ketchup on the dry side, few herbs, add cheese, season, then toast

Toast both sides, then add cheese and grill, with Lea & Perrins also, which I didn't know till the other day, even though I have used the stuff for years, was fish based

If I am just making toast, I butter the bread first, then put it in the toaster.

When doing plain old toast, I just bung it in the toaster.
Cheese on toast is different!

I toast one side, then butter the non toasted side, put cheese on then grill it.

Perfection!

OK here is the definitive way to do it

Grill one side of the bread as you would for normal toast.

Then grill the other side, but only hafl way to normal toast.

Then add the cheese to the half grilled side and return to the grill until it has all melted

Job done.

My toaster does both sides nicely. Why anyone in their right mind would put rotted bovine lactation on bread, toast it and then eat it is beyond me.

Toast = Toast both sides (lightly)

Cheese on toast = Toast one side, turn over add cheese to untoasted side and return to grill to melt otherwise the crust and edge around cheese burns and I hate burnt toast.

Yes, I hate it getting burnt around the edges.

I'm off home to make some cheese on toast now.

Which do people like, mild or mature?
I find the Cathedral City advert quite misleading, as my cheese never browns. Or any mature cheddar for that matter!

In the toaster as if I try using the grill I burn it.
