Wireless home alarm system
Has anyone got one or had one of these?
After a bunch of house break ins in and around the village that my parents live in they are looking at getting an alarm system. My dad doesnt want the hassle of a wired system due to all the work and redecorating involved.
There are a couple of basic systems in srewfix and the like but i just wondered if they are any good?

They are a PITA m8. We have one and even though the main alarm box is rechargable the batteries run out and I have to get up the ladder and change them.
All the sensors run out too and require new batteries TBH I would get them to go for a wired one I am sure the redecorating would be minimal.

Never had a burglar alarm myself (and never been burgled either before you ask .... ) but from what I've read the wired ones are tons better and much more reliable. I'd go ask your local neighbourhood plod (crime prevention officer??? ) what they recommend. Even if they can't/won't recommend a make they'll advise on what type and where to put sensors etc.

ive got one they are pretty good. With mine I got 2 keyrings with the alarm controllers on them, a key pad you put near your front door and 2 motion sensors.
the keyrings are good as you dont have to type in the 4 digit pin everytime you need to arm or disarm the system. They are pretty cheap these days and definatly worth getting one.

Have you looked it ADT/Brinks they have systems that work with cell phones, no hard lines needed!! I have used them for years at home and work and had good luck with both.

No all wireless systems are bad, We've had a monitored ADT system for a few years which is all wireless and I am very pleased with them.
Sure you pay a monthly monitoring fee but this is no more than a mobile phone contract and for that you get 24/7 monitoring, daily system checks, 2 annual maintenance visits.
People tend to ignore sirens and bells assuming them to be false alarms or simply cant be bothered, Id rather the police were called
We had a call a few months back saying they noticed a low battery in one of the internal doors could they come out in the afternoon to swap it! this is the peace of mind that someone else maintaining a system brings.
Battery life is 4-5 years but as above, no need for you to worry about it.

We have an alarm fitted which is clearly shown on the front of the house and we got our kitchen window smashed, they came in through the window and stole money, they even put the dog in the hallway to keep it out the way.
If a burgular is on drugs and is just looking for money NO alarm will stop them getting in as they will know a) it will be just ignored or b) it will take 5 mins or more for the cops to arrive by then they would have done the cupboards and found money etc and have gone.
I do live in a low crime area as well and up to the poiint of the incident we didn't need any locking windows at all as there was no need for them.
We have now had all the windows changed so at best they would only be able to break the glass but not get in now.
I would suggest getting an alarm yes, but I would also and probably more importantly make sure your windows/doors are secure as it only takes a few mins for them to go through things and get away, just remember an alarm is only useful when someone gets in by that time the problem is already there.
Just for information we knew it was only a money thing as the rest of the house was untouched and there were car keys and a moped there for the taking...security has now been greatly improved ;-)

Get a wired one fitted. If anyone lives in Lincolnshire i can recommend a great bloke. He did ours and my sisters, never a problem. All we have is three motion sensors, thats all you need to cover all entrances. Door sensors are not needed, waste of money.
