the people the own the boats and the people that allow the export need to answer, as the ones we watched on the show are just the workers. throwing away all that fish and people are dieing from starvation.
Gordon said it taste of noodles I asked a friend of mine who's from that side of the world and it he says it tastes amazing but after watching the show. he won't be eating it that often.
hats of to Gordon to have ***** to go out there.

I could understand it if they controlled the fishing rights and ate the shark. As for the fin leaving the rest of it to die er not on.But this has been going on for years even well before you were a thought in your old mans ball bag Mus

Can you think of any other instances where a part of the animal is hacked off and then the animal 'set free' ? - its not like it will survive at all
Coupled with the population decline of course !

I know sadly it has, I've been fishing now for around 9 years beach boat even occasionally fly fishing. but beach fishing has been affected the worse it's just not the same as before. some fellow older anglers say that's we used to have cod in the Thames years ago. but due to over fishing and pollution you just won't see any now.
in the show they said it cost 28 pounds for a shark thin, happens if they just drop the price completely to like 2 dollars I don't think many people would want to catch them just for there thin they will be forced to use the meat.

It is barbaric to treat animals in this way.
Each year we go diving looking for sharks in the Red Sea/Carribean, and each year we see fewer and fewer.
It's very clear to me that pretty soon there will be no shark fin industry because they will have exterminated their quarry. I'm hoping those who eat the soup will die off shortly afterwards!!

We had this debate a few years ago on Snet and there was a member who had worked on those boats, finning sharks. He didn't give a sh*t.
I find it one of the most disgusting harvesting systems in the world. At it's peak it was reported that up to a million sharks a year were being finned and thrown back live to die as they sink to the depths.
Truly disgusting.

Disgusting and well done to Ramsey for at least trying. But I expect his restaurants still serve veal and foie gras?
I found this on Google and it wasn't that long ago that this was on the menu in post restaurants and in tins IIRC
Turtle Soup
"To butcher a turtle you start by chopping off the turtle's head. Be careful because the head will still bite even after it is removed from the body and the body will still crawl away after the head is removed. Turtles don't die right away."
My old MD was in Japan and at the dinner they were shaving the brain from a live monkey as a delicacy.

Seen the Monkey Brain thing, wasn't impressed. Although I thought it was a specifically Chinese thing.
I didn't see the program. But from the comments above, they cut off the fin and then throw the shark back. Is Shark not okay to eat? It seems odd that they would just throw back quite a large fish.

my vitanmese friend told me they did it in china, they keep the monkey alive. apparently you can see the monkeys eyes. dont know how true it is doesnt mean that all chinese people share the same mentality on monkey brains and shark fin which a good sign.

Saw a show on tv a couple of nights ago where some completely backward tribe of blokes jumped into a couple of boats to harpoon a sperm whale. They used manpower to row the boats back to their island and dragged the huge whale ashore, where they were able to feed themselves for three weeks, nothing went to waste.
Such a contrast to the selfish greed highlighted in the Gordon Ramsay show mentioned above.

Chinese and Japanese are just weird
Everything they do is weird.
I can tell you a story about a restaurant in Japan that served snake.
They took great delight in butchering the thing live in front of you.
What about the Jap's annual Dolphin cull - thats just as cruel.
