I don't know anyone personally, but I know I myself totally stopped bothering a good while back. Partly because I am pale and it was a bit of a waste of money for the little results I had. But also, as money has become even tighter, it's so far down the list of priorities.

I know quite a few people that used to hammer the sunbeds, who rarely seem to go now (apart from a few weeks max in the summer-lead up to hols most likely).

What may be worth considering on her part is going to a few local places for a blast, and quiz them about how they are doing. Obviously not like potential competition, just a bit chit-chat. Some real market research if you like.

I can see the point of asking here, but one area may very much differ from another. Best discreetly get the local info directly.

Possibly opening yourself up to large liabilities, make sure you have some good liability insurance.
In my opinion year by year people will use these less and less as even the pikey idiots will start to understand they give you skin cancer.

Is it worth considering the beauty side of things too, depending upon local competition i.e. nails, eyebrow waxing/shaping, waxing, manicures.pedicures etc.?

I used to go to worship my sun god twice a week back in the day. I stopped when I got pregnant, and have never really gone back on them.

I look at my sister skin who is two years younger than me and I am glad I stopped!

It is amazing how much of a difference the longe term use makes to your skin.

The shop I used to go to is still open, but two of the three closes ones to me have closed down.
I think that with all the new skin cancer awareness and the problems related to over exposure of uv rays, peop[le are scared to use them. I think ladies are finding other ways to look tanned other than actually getting a tan.

Like has been said, maybe do some local market research first, and see how the business is doing, but considering I live in the city, there isn't many people using the beds around here.

My wife owns a hair salon and we considered the tanning booth things but in the end went for a tanning spray machine.

Much safer, can look just as good as UV burn if done properly - its all about giving an even finish without using too much solution. Some of the ones the wife had in the past were terrible but she has her spray action pretty much nailed. I tried it and made a bit of a mess on the wife. One thing though its very cold when its sprayed on to you.

There are two shops in town that offer UV tanning. One is part of a hair salon and they hardly ever have bookings, the other only did beauty and UV tanning but never seems open these days.

Eye lash extension are popular and look good if done properly but will remove natural lashes which may or may not grow back. Hair extensions are still popular although again will eventually tear your own hair out - good extensions can take hours though so its book on Mondays when the shop would normally be closed.

I used to own one around 5 years ago, spent an absolute fortune getting the shop ready and nearly £50k on beds.

You will earn 50/50 from the bed income to the product you sell.

The month after we opened the shop, the media had a blitz on sunbeds, with every other programme on the TV about skin cancer etc etc.

As has been mentioned above, these shops are very commonly used as a front, so beware.

I know this is an old thread but I've replied just in case anyone else has the same questions as the OP

If you are looking for information regarding the UK tanning industry, or looking to find a service provider in the area please check out sunbeddirectory.uk

I only stopped using them in the last year as, now a father of 2 I've kind of given up trying to look 'fantastic' for the world.
being 37 my money can be spent better elsewhere.

While using though it wasn't just people wanting darker skin. People were using them for muscle relief and even skin issues.

I think they are as popular as ever but location is key. Don't get beds get the stand up ones.
my local one has them at 30p a minute between 11am week days and 2pm and its rammed.
