Default happy new year (not)

6am awoken by a crunching of metal.some **** has just reversed into my car.then done a runner.got his reg no. and phoned cops. cops are having trouble contacting the owner.it was a young guy driving and im guessing its an older chap that owns the car.i rekon the young guys borrowed it.

now how will this effect an insurance claim.im thinking old guy denies all knowledge and then what.cops are asking me if i would recognise him again at an id parade but what if i dont identify him does that mean ive not got a case.

ive got a funny feeling he will get away with it.any thoughts .

Where are you located?

You sound American...... "Cops"

That is a sh1te start to Twenty Eleven. You certainly do need to let the police (cops) do their bit first although it is new years day. Ideally you could do with a Jobs worth on the case rather than someone who resents working new years day otherwise iit might drag on for a week before anything happens.

Do the ID parade if you got a good look at him/her, as they must suspect "someone" if they are prepared to offer this so quickly.

I'm glad the Police are actually investigating. If they continue, it would be easy to see the damage to the other person's car and then you can bring an insurance claim against them.

Gutted for you, but on the plus side - no-one was hurt.

If they track down the cars owner, unless it has been reported stolen, you can file an insurance claim as he will have corresponding damage. He then has to decide whether or not to provide the driver's details. If the police are investigating I'm sure they will help him make up his mind too

american ha! ha!. im from scotland.cops is shorter to type than police he! he.!car that hit mine was a hyundai tuscon 4x4.i doubt it would have a scratch.it crushed my front wing/wheel arch quite badly but still driveable.

just wondering how the insurance would view it. no doubt they would say it was a 50/50 knowing my luck. police said other driver has 24hours to report accident.

Can't go 50/50 if you weren't even in the car!

Surely if you gave the reg no, it is only a matter of time before the Police catch up with them.
Good luck. Not a great start to the new year

Funny isn't it. You have the reg and yet the police can do nothing.

Yet if it was a speeding offence off a camers the reg no is all that is needed even down to prosecuting the registered keeper if the driver is not identified.

Hypocrisy in action.

If you are fully comp, you should be able to get your insurance company to manage it.

Alternatively a blame claim solicitor

(Had that happen to me after an accident that was my fault - all openly admitted etc......But the very next morning I had a solicitor's letter on my doostep, that in literary/legal speak wanted to pull down my trousers )

Check the damage to your car and see if his car has left paint traces. Police used to be able to take paint samples and match them, for hit and run cases. Even the threat might be enough to make the other driver own up!

The police will not want to do anything, nothing in it for them.

YOU need to push them to do something. If they seem not to want to, or seem slow, go into the copshop and ask to speak to the duty Inspector.

Surely the car's owner will have to tell the cops who was driving the car, or take the rap himself!

+ 2 Good sound advise. AND oif this fails to have an impact I would speak to a Solicitor (you will be able to claim this cost back from you Insurance?!?! Legal Fees)

Good luck.
