Problems with employment
Right, as some of you may no i am a student, and if you did not know that,...well, I'm a student
Before i start this thread I'd like to point out i am not some douche bag who goes to London demonstrating how i feel about student fees by throwing paint cans at certain people's cars, so don't paint me with that brush (or can if we want to get topical)
Anyway here is my problem i would like some advice on, I have given a bit of background information just to describe the situation as well as possible
I work part time in a pub for a couple who own it who happen to be my parents friends. When i first started the work there i didn't necessarily need the money (although we could always do with extra cash) i just wanted to be a part of the pub (has a lot of sentimental history but i wont bore you with that one), and to try and help it do well.
As time went on i was encouraged to do a cellar course, food hygiene course and then recently a licensee course. My job role there is now bar supervisor/Bar manager..or however you want to put it. One day i went into work and they have made two of the other girls who work there (one is other bar supervisor) full time. They did not warn any of the other staff who worked there about this, but everybody else's shifts have been cut hugely.
For me and other staff (except the two now full timers) it feels as though we are all being shunned out the back door because the owners are too cowardly to admit to us they want two people full time and then very casual staff to work around them. I am returning to university next week after a long break and personally it feels as though they are treating me like this as if me returning to university is me turning my back on them. Another person who works there is a professional dancer (not the exotic kind ) and she is choreographing a part in a film so that is her main priority. She feels as the same as me.
Now i can accept this as it is a bar job and is not exactly the most stable job in the world but this next part is my actual issue.
On my shift on Monday night i got to work, and i was working a shift with the dancer girl. We had a list of things to do and some of them were things that were meant to be carried out by the staff on the end of the last shift, and i said to the landlady (please bare in mind we have a very banter filled relationship, and i know her quite well with her being friends with my parents)
"technically these things are supposed to be done at the end of the previous shift"
She responded " well you can have a go at me then because i was doing one of those and i didn't finish it"
Me: i wasn't having a go i was just saying (said in sarcastic manner)
landlady: *laughs* yeah yeah
dancer girl : stop winging Chris (thats me ) you know I'll end up doing the washing up anyway
landlady :if you really don't want to do it the washing up boy can do it in the morning.
The landlady then said she had to leave said her goodbyes as usual and nothing was out of the ordinary. about 4 hours later before the pub shut, the landlord came in and asked to have a chat with me. He took me into the office and said "i understand you have said to the landlady that you are refusing to do the washing up because you don't feel it is in your job description. I was literally gob smacked so i did not say anything. He then said because of this you are not working your next two shifts, had it have been me i would have fired you but this is the outcome. I said thats not what i said and we were joking. he said that it was final and he is sick of hearing me belittle the landlady in front of punters, and he then left the pub.
I later spoke with the dancer girl who was on shift and she was completely shocked as well. Just to clarify there was no punters, in fact nobody at all in the pub as it had just opened.
So i have now lost two shifts for something that didn't happen and i have not been given a chance to say my side of the story. i yesterday received a voice mail saying we will be having a meeting before my next shift where i will receive a verbal warning?!
Firstly can they cut my shifts off as punishment, and secondly can they give me a form of punishment before carrying out this meeting where i will have a verbal warning? i have had this all put against me and i haven't had a chance to explain my side of the story?
It ultimately feels like this is all happening because they want to get rid of me because i am starting back at university?
For the record my meeting with him will be on Sunday.
I hope this is all clear.
I'd appreciate any help

Before you go in all guns blazing
How many hours do you work per week, and how long have you worked there
Your employment rights and next steps depend on the above
In all honesty, given that your a student, its hardly likely that you could be a full time employee as you wont be there full time.
What does your contract of employment state your job role is? its responsibilities
TBH i don't think your going to come out of this that well, so I'd be prepared to chalk it down to experience.
Oh and a word from the wise, never work for family / friends
Been there done that, and been made redundant by them as well
never again lol

Is it owned by a brewery?
They might be having a hard time as landlords at the pub.
They may actually need you to go asap to fulfill there budget.
Your mam and the landlady may have had a few words lately etc etc etc
You are going to be a student again shortly, you don't need someone in employment law to tell you how to fight this. Just hand your notice in and say thanks and ask if they will reference you at a later date, I take it they initially done you the favour anyway.

I somehow have started to imagine you as the kind of policeman typified by Phil and Nige off of "Early Doors".

How about just speaking to them like normal human beings do?
Perhaps I'm from a different planet, but from my experience it usually helps.
They have probably got themselves into a situation they don't want to be in but if you speak to them like an adult they will probably welcome it!

You are temporary staff.
You are not the boss.
Regardless of what YOU may think, you are a subordinate.
Do what you are asked/told to do.
Do it with good grace.
Do it to the best of your ability.
Do it WELL.
Do it FAST.
Adopt the above sentiment to EVERY JOB you ever get. (Even when employed pemanently)
It's served me well
Don't be a kiss **** "YES" person - Be Honest and be open to requests from managers.
If you CAN'T do a job in a certain time - Work out what you need to get the job done by a certain time (more people/more supplies etc) and tell your manager that.
