Default Advice - exterior downlighters ???

Quick one, have a couple off exterior downlighters within the porch area off the front door off the house- MR16 type, anyway wife decided she wanted to replace the two white coloured bulbs for nice blue coloured ones so buys two 50 watt coloured mr16 bulbs and fits them, unfortunatly its not giving us the blue effect we are looking for, the area on the ground directly underneath the lights ie. doormat !! is giving more off a green light but there is nothing in way off blue light around the doorway area itself.

have see houses where they have obviously changed to these blue bulbs where it does light up the whole doorway in a nice blue colour, how do we get this same effect ??!!!

Colour purity on coloured MR16 halogens is a bit pants IMO. As its just a normal halogen with a filter infront which quickly fades or burns off due to the UV.

Maybe an LED equivelent maybe called for as these have a much purer colour output

If you need ample light, then make sure its a high power jobbie that use either one or three single chip LEDs in the bulb. Not to be confused with the bulbs that use 20+ small LEDs bunched into a cluster as they'll be far too dim for any use other than accent lighting (although they usually can be had for less than £10, so worth a try). You may have to also swap the transformer if its an compact/electronic type and replace it with either a wire-wound transformer or LED driver.

Energy saving too: I used to have 5 MR16 outside the house in the soffits and porch...250watts wasted everynight: Thats about £5 a month! swapped for 3watt warm white LEDs at £13 a pop, which now cost 6pence a month to run. So they a paid off in saving in just over a year.
