Jaws the Return
Sadly a tourist was killed by a shark in Sharm today - snorkelling in the 'protected area'. Apparently her legs were torn off and she died shortly after. Local witnesses said she was screaming in the water.
The fifth shark attack in as many days, including a foot bitten off and a leg bitten off.
Two sharks have been caught - Oceanic White Tip and a Mako - and bathing was reopened in the protected area as deemed safe.
The local shark experts said that the sharks caught were probably not responsible for the attacks and that there was at least one other shark at large that was dangerous. The local mayor said that the waters were safe and reopened the beaches!

its very strange isnt it tho ?
We were at dahab and then sharm and of coiurse theres the lure of the possiblity of glimpsing a shark .
However we slowly realised it was cack and if we stood any chance at all it would have to be high summer and well off the cape there
( we went march )

I think it's not very nice that they are killing the sharks, i understand people have been hurt/died and it's terrible, but it's the sea! It's their home, they kill to eat and we're in their space.
Thanks
Sam

I worked up the coast during the mid 80's for an exploration company, we went swimming at the beach during a really hot day - when I say beach it was just a sandy strip rather than a beach club.
There was a ship that had ran onto rocks about 400 yards off the beach, we decided to swim to it for a dare type thing, I managed around 300 yards then saw a fin, big ******... must have been 10 -12 feet in length.... I managed to swim back to the beach in record speed.
A diving company we were using told me that there we big aggressive sharks in the area and they'd been attacked on several occasions and advised us to 'not bother' swimming. So to this day I'm never shocked when I hear stories like this about Sharm.

i'm booked on a weeks diving holiday there. I fly out next saturday. Bottom line is i'm not getting in the water if they haven caught a shark which was cut open and body parts are found inside.

They are a very inquisitive and bold shark but usually leave it at a close look or a nudge.

Some dead sheep from an Australian Cargo ship bringing in sheep to slaughter for a religious celebration has very recently dumped sheep that died on the journey in the area.
This has the potential to bring the sharks in and cause a bit of a feeding frenzy.
Having dived many times in the Red Sea with sharks, especially Oceanics, and occasionally Tigers, I can assure you that divers are generally pretty safe from any risk of attack.
The only time I've seen or heard of attacks has been when some unscrupulous dive operations have been chumming the water to attract the sharks for photos. This was for example the cause of the attack on the French woman who was attacked and killed earlier this year in the Red Sea (Brothers or Elphinstone if I recall correctly). Any experienced diver will tell you that sharks are amazing creatures, and generally pretty timid. Divers are NOT on the menu for sharks, although Great Whites tend to be a bit bonkers and will eat anything.
Even after these attacks it would not put me off diving in the area, as the risk is very very low. However, if I was near a dive boat that had been chumming I would not enter the water, as then the risk is considerably heightened, especially if you are near the surface.
I spent 2 weeks diving North and South Red Sea locations from liveaboards earlier this year, and we only saw one 4ft shark (off Shark & Yoland reef) in the 2 weeks (over 40 dives), we were gutted, as the previous year (same weeks) we had seen Hammerheads, Tigers and Oceanics. So for sharks to be in as far as Middle Garden (the location of the recent fatality) it's very unusual indeed, and indicates a man made cause of the problem.

In 2003, I spent 4 months working for the South African Great White Shark Research Institute based in Cape Town but operating out of Gansbaai, SA. Everyday involved both observing and diving with these magnificent animals and it was truly awe inspiring.
It was naturally my choice to do this and knew the risks of working with these animals in their own environment. I understood that in their realm they are king and you must respect that fact.
