I am amazed that he can maintain control at speeds like that, too easy to lose sight of it. My R/C competition aerobatic model would only manage around 80-ish and that seemed pretty fast!

Amazing!
At what distance would the plane go out of range of the controller and if the plane's doing 400mph how many seconds of horizontal flying time would that give you?
He's obviously worked that out and it looks like somewhere around 3 seconds before it needs turning around but I'm far too dense to actually do the maths.
Anyone?

The model would be out of sight before the controller would be out of range. If you can't see it you can't control it of course and at those speeds that situation could arise very quickly.

I would get maybe 10 seconds or so from one side of the flypast in front of me to where I would have to manoeuvre the model to reverse its direction. Thats is doing about 80mph. So you can easily see that he would not have much time on each flypast.

Thanks Les.
I remember that if my r/c car went out of range (usually somewhere around a football pitch and a half) the throttle would carry on at whatever setting it was already at and the car would zoom off into the distance until it smashed into something solid.
I wonder whether the same would happen to the plane.

I always set a failsafe on the onboard receiver so that if contact to the transmitter is lost for whatever reason, the onboard servos return to a preset condition, eg control surfaces to neutral position and throttle to idle.

remember that rich bloke in america who got divorced and it cost him billions and he joked it would have been better for him to run the bitch over and do the 5-10 years for involuntary man slaughter rahter than give away over half his fortune to her.

He should have bought one of those and flown it into her at full pelt, easy to claim thats an accident as that thing looked ******* uncontrollable!

surely there are restrictions on stuff like that, i live 20 mins from manchester airport, imagine if i lost control and speared a landing passenger jet or something!

That is insane. How the hell the guy controlling it can see it enough to fly it so well is beyond me.
Even landed it with pin point accuracy!

If I ever had the inclination/time/money then I'd have to relive childhood memories..

He is hardly going to bring it on the approach to land at 400mph! more like 30-40 at a guess.

Well I know that Les, it sounded like he bought it in on idle, I was mightily impressed at the distance he made the sweeping approach from.

Edit, how does he know how much fuel is left? is it like they do in rockets and just time the burn?

Yes I see what you mean. We used to make a pretty long wide approach to land after an aero sequence straight after the last manoeuvre to save time. Not too difficult, but it was a good idea not to frighten the judges with your landing! Tended to lose you a few points if you did that

You get a feel for how long you can fly on a tank of fuel and you can usually sense when its time to land. You could still do a glide approach if the engine stopped, but might not have a decent choice of a landing spot.
