Lots of those are down to typos, but as stated, no excuse for not checking before sending.

The mother has no axe to grind, yet has sent it to the media

I used to know a guy who taught secondary. He used to send his reports to the formteacher written lightly in pencil, get them back corrected with LOTS of corrections, then go over them in ink and rub out the pencil. He knew he couldn't spell, but got round it. PE teacher, mind
This was back in the days of report BOOKS with handwritten comments.

I remember those. Infact I still have a couple of leather bound ones from my last couple of years of secondary school, Jeff. Only the art teacher used a typed up template

Not very impressive. If they were typos you would think the report was worth checking for those too.

Good job nobody is checking Scoobynet for typos and spelling. I'm glad to have "bought" "brought" this to your attention, "their" "there" "they're" you go.

And teachers at my daughters' school teach "haitch" instead of "aitch" which I have banged on about before but cannot stand.

They didn't pick up on the "however"s, I see. At the beginning of a sentence where the sense is 'nevertheless', it should be followed by a comma. In the middle of a sentence it is parenthetical and should be both preceded by and followed by a comma.

Does that mean it is the same as using brackets?

The same purpose is served in that the "however" is separated from the sentence by their use. If the "however" was removed, the sentence would still be completely understandable and no information would be lost. In my view, though, brackets are reserved for separate ideas or information introduced into the sentence.

I applaud you, but on Scoobynet just getting most posters to use uppercase letters, basic full stops and commas correctly should be our first aim.

Let's save the super advanced stuff for later

Extra comma after the "view" is not required. IMHO

Yes it is. The word "though" isn't essential to the sense of the sentence so it's separated off by commas in the same way as "however" would be.

Honest question Bubs:

How come your trade is a carpenter when you have quite an obvious knowledge of the Queens English? Would you/do you teach English even part time?

As said genuine question, as you seem passionate about it

Well, a genuine question deserves a serious answer. As it happens, I've left the joinery trade owing to the recession depriving me of a job last winter. I'm now back doing my other job as technical support in a school science department. I've no qualifications to teach English, I just read a lot of books - some of them about style, grammar and punctuation in English because it's something that interests me greatly. I really like how writing can be incredibly powerful in the hands of someone truly skilled at it. I love its rules, its idiosyncracies, its nuances... in fact everything about it. Reading a badly-constructed sentence actually causes me mental pain.
If I did decide I wanted to teach, my degree is in Geology. My hobbies, however, are painting, sculpture and music.

I'm truly rubbish at any form of sport, though.

Bubba, if you have a degree (even in Geology), have you considered going down the Primary School route?

As far as I'm aware, you just need a degree then you can go on to complete a PGCE. I could be wrong though.

Might be worth a thought if it is something that may interest you, that way you catch them while they are young. Before they have fallen into bad habits.

You seem to have a broad range of interests and knowledge, and I actually think you could have alot to offer in this field. Plus, I think although you are 'fussy' you would get the point across in a good manner. It would probably be an advantage that you already have experience within schools.

All just my opinion, and I apologise for any mistakes in my post.

(please don't feel free to point them out )
