Crikey mart where have you been?

They are a data stream that certain software can pick up and display on your PC/phone/device or whatever.

They allow data to be 'pushed' to you rather than you having to go and 'pull' it.

A common use for them is something like the BBC news site. Each time a story is published it appears on their RSS feed and if you are 'subscribed' to it you will get a notification on your device.

The amount of data sent is generally very small ... a short summary of each article for instance... you can then click on the article if it sounds interesting and read it in its entirety on the website.

That is a very simplistic view of RSS as there are other things it can do, but that is it in a nutshell.
