There is a segment of road near me that is so bad that instead of fixing it they just reduced the speed limit to 30mph(previously NSL)

If VEL duty was spent on maintaining the highways and byways people would not be 'so' bothered about paying it. Unfortunatly it is more likely to be used for topping up Jeremy Kyles clients income.

Gloucestershire??? Try Herts!

The A41 is getting worse as well.......great swathes of the surface have worn away, and there are tramlines in places.

You should come to Scunny: North Lincs council went Tory 7 years ago. The Tories are supported by the rural area, so guess how many of Scunny's roads were surfaced in that tenure? Yep, zero

Now Lying Labour are back, and the money is being spent on a new entertainment centre, (£15M), a new sports/swimming centre, (£20M), and sundry cycle tracks all over the place, including many through out central park and narrowing of currently free-flowing roads to encourage people out of their cars. Like we have an efficient public transport

Meanwhile, winter looms and the roads are ALREADY in a right state..........

It's no wonder everyone is getting tooled up in Range Rover Sports and other assorted SUV's in my area, they really make light work of the cr@p roads, otoh they cause more wear and tear due to their weight/size.

Other week i was down putney and in the bus lane going over the putney bridge is worst pothole i have ever seen-even from sitting in pub on far side i could tell when a bus had hit it as thing shook all over place-then next day they had filled it-what an abortion-they must have only gave bloke half amount of tarmac he needed to do job and then blindfolded him and told him to use the back of a spade to hit it level and i think they must have gave him a time limit of 30 seconds to do job and that included dashing in and out of traffic.

They have used the allocated money for road repair for other things for so long now that it won't be long that the roads will become too expensive to repair anyway!

If they fill in a pothole it is done so inexpertly that in a few days it is as bad as it was before.

I remember the days when councils took a pride in the state of their roads!
