You have to wait until the old one runs out, although Ive done this countless times and people only seem interested in the expiry date.

By law you can't display the new disc until the first of the month.
But the chances of a too early disc being spotted by an actual living police officer are slim bordering on non-existent. You're more likely to be spotted by ANPR, so assuming you have a disc that covers the remains of the preceding period, you will probably be OK.

as Cris says, unless you have no Tax on the car now, and are hoping that if you get one from November that will sufficem then only an eagle eyed traffic warden or an ANPR camera car will get you.

No, you sound like you are spinning around all in a tizz and making no sense.
Why would you even think about displaying the new disk early? You just swap the paper disk over when the old one expires. It's so simple a 4 y/o could do it.

Actually, as long as the computer system tells it that your fully paid up, an ANPR camera won't give a toss if you've got a tax disc from 20 years ago taped to your windscreen

From Direct Gov. site
"A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200."

I've always done this since you could tax online. If i got the maximum fine of £200, i'm sure i could get more from some story hungry tabloid paper on how being too efficient is now a crime. You'd have to get the most jobsworth Copper to even get anything more than a warning. As mentioned above they are ANPR machines not ATDR machines
If you are that unlucky then just wait, then forget and get nicked for not displaying a valid tax disc

The only time cops bother looking for out of date tax discs is during heir first two year probationary period in which they have to submit two correctly completed forms (CLA2.6 I think) to qualify, after that, they don't care unless they are on a fishing trip.
