Default Lord Alan Sugar

Looking forward to the new series of The Apprentice. Both this and The Dragons Den are amongst the best programmes the BBC pump out at the moment.

On thinking of Lord Alan Sugar, I understand how he has became so rich but really does his wealth not show how someone can be successful even if their products are very mediocre in quality. Maybe i'm missing something but he seems to have just produced cheap shite.

There is a great business speaker I get to watch everyone once in a while who has five rules in business - these are rules he has distilled over the years that he believes differentiates good businesses from bad businesses.

One of the biggest weaknesses of a business person is to fall in love with their product - meaning that the focus is on the product. Clearly Alan Sugar understood this from day one!

awww c'mon. Piers Morgan was a self effacing, **** licking, banal ****. some of his questions were so cring worthy. he is only interested in himself, fame and money and he didn't actually tell us something we didnt know already about Alan Sugar.

I think Sugar's wealth is based on his original 80's money after selling off Amstrad etc.. Once you get to a certain point in wealth, the wise investment of earnings in medium risk sectors is all that is needed. Ok its not quite that simple, but a large capital base is easier to keep hold of and make it earn.

I had a PC 1512

However I found Alan Sugar pretty funny - brought him out in a different light altogether.

Yep - disappears for an hour, "Went on missing list as he called it"
Then comes back and tells missus he's flogged the house!

I think the key reason for this is that Lord Sugar was one of the pioneers of bringing technology to the masses..... whilst not the best (although the CPC stuff was pretty good), it made technology otherwise cost-prohibitive, available.

Fair play to him :-) I think what REALLY made the money was getting the Sky box contract with Murdoch - something along the lines of £20 per box to make especially back in the OLD days of boggo Sky (the subsequent Sky Digital) - he was RAKING it in.....

Again, there was a big documentary on him a couple of years ago. And of course, his company's rise was mentioned in the BBC3 film (with Martin whatshisface & Alexander Armstrong) Micro Men - VERY interesting story about the rise of the home computer market - you can see how much money was about even then.

his big idea basically centred around PSU's

why pay for three PSU's when buying HiFi separates – so he made a HiFi box that looked like separates but had 1 PSU so he cut his costs

same with his PC512 -- single PSU in the monitor (even though the early ones caught fire)

but a clever idea really

his business model – is market trader thru and thru – pile it high and sell it cheap

then he moved into property with AMSHoldings

I enjoyed the programme, can't stand Piers Morgan but Alan Sugar was funny - he'll need a sense of humour when he sees the sausages his "Apprentices" are making tonight

I am watching the apprentice at the moment which I find hard to stomach at the best of times - wife watches it. If he doesn't "fire" the biggest most objectionable tw@t, then there is a lot wrong with the world.

I've now had a couple of interactions with the Sugar family, Sir Alan, his wife and his father in law. They are all very decent people, nothing like I was expecting them to be ie obnoxious.

He's a *****, and Alan Sugar is an overrated, overexposed celeb 'businessman'. He's done what? Amstrad were a failure in the end.

It's sad he's someone we look up to in this country as a model for success. He should get off TV and just drive his vulgar cars about all day!

Not much I suppose, started from nothing, built his own business out of nothing, given jobs to hundreds of people, worth the best part of a billion pounds, heads a very successful TV show, became a Sir and then a Lord, pretty average life I'd say.

I'm sure you've done a lot more with your life mate!

Give me self-effacing Japanese business people who actually CREATE successful products and businesses.

Sugar is just a market trader who did extremely well.

The illusion of actual economic success.

How are Amstrad doing BTW?

No idea.

I'm not saying he's the best person/businessman/TV celeb ever. Your "He's done what?" comment just made me smile.

Ranked number 84 on the most recent Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated fortune of around £830m. A real failure that.

Tell me Mr Wonderful ,what are you worth then??
