my mum and dad have a 7 acre field it has a stable block on it with four horses 5 sheep 20 odd chickens and three geese. over these last few weeks we have been having more and more stuff going walk about - nothing big just little stuff like a cordless drill set ,batteries off tractors and two radiators off two off roading 4x4s. last year someone even stole some rare breed chickens and the ride on lawn mower but we got that back !!
now ive had enough. the main problem is there is no mains power there is just a petrol generator but that cant be run 24/7 and mum and dad live about 500 metres across a small country lane and down a bit of road ive just ordered 5 alarm mines they have a "blank" shot gun cartridge in them and a trip wire so im going to put them in a few places and im sure if they go off at night dad should hear them. i was trying to find a 12v cctv kit that could run off a leisure battery but not really sure if that would work ?!?!? the next thing i thought was people just jump over the gate we have a spare electric fence unit i was thinking of running a thin wire on the inside of the gate so when you go to climb and jump over it your hand will hit the wire and give you a bit of a shock. now every thing i do needs to stay within the law else id be happy to sit up there in a gilly suit and shoot what ever **** hole is doing this. all ideas welcome!

Why do I think that if someone gets hurt in anyway this is going to come back and bit you on the ****? you should know by now the crooks can do what they like (and so can the pikeys) and if you try to stop them you will be in trouble for hurting them while on your property...
sucks don't it.
I myself would go for the gilly suit and shotgun...

Many years ago, in the Village I grew up in. Our local farmer had a bit of bother with some Gypsies stealing from his farm. He had 2 son's who were understandably wanting to protect their fathers property. Anyway, I don't know what happened exactly, but they caught 1 or 2 of them stealing one night. 1 or 2 punches were thrown and said thieves were chased off. Perfectly within their rights, as they were having people steal their property.
The farmer and his sons thought that would be the end of it now. How wrong they were.
A week later their stables containing their show jumping horses was set alight. Stables and horses were destroyed.
Upset the Gypsies at your own risk. Chase them off by all means, but go any further and await the consequences.
Not saying it will happen, but I've seen first hand what they will do to get their own back.

Dogs dont listen to crap they chew then ask questions after,a friend years age had similar problem the pikeys were caught they found where they came from then were stripped sprayed with shults underseal and dropped several miles from home naked, this worked until the next batch of scum came but shooting them with 12 bore loaded with black pepper corn worked a treat, pikeys only know pain and fear

Dont be daft with traps and spikes and ****e like that - at best it will land you in serious legal bother, at worst, it will endanger yourself and your family. As mentioned above, a pissed off pikey is not something to be shrugged off lightly - scum will ALWAYS be willing to go further than a law-abiding person if it comes to a tit-for-tat battle. Real pikies wont think twice about turning up en-mass and dishing out a proper beating, or setting property on fire etc.
Your best bets as a deterrant are light and noise - no thief likes to be brightly lit while working, and loud noises atracting attention help a lot too. You can now get solar-powered montion sensitive security floodlights. They are not fantastic though, but a bit of ingenuity with a soldering iron will see them wired up to a leisure battery and there are plenty of 12v sounders that could be triggered at the same time to make a racket if you wish.

The biggest mistake here was not finding where they came from, you have to take the crap back to them BIG TIME, a little unleaded works a treat, like dont f@@k with me,most of us think the law will protect us bulsh't,to much paper work.A mans home is his castle or should be,the law should be on the side of the them not some f@@kin invader
I would not however go Pikey hunting on Farmland. Land and home are different.
Go after them on your land with a shotgun, and they will retort. As said above, anything a (by and large) law abiding citizen will do, scum will always do harder, and in greater numbers.
There are area's of my town where (and I know this for a fact) that people have been beaten within a inch of their lives over trivial ****, that involved p!ssing off the pikeys.
One of my Girlfriends mates had his head repeatedly hit with a hammer all over a mobile phone. He slurs, can't walk straight and has a brain tumour that can't be operated on. This happened 7 years ago. He ain't expected to remember the 10th anniversary. Did this really happen? Yes, as she lived next door to him, heard his screaming and threw herself in between him and the pikeys. Saved his life.

Trouble is, we have to be so careful these days not to deny the would be criminals their human rights!
I remember a while ago, there was an elderly lady who was plagued endlessly by thugs trying to break into her house. When she put up a barbed wire fence to make it more difficult for them and in an attempt to defend herself, she was ordered by the authorities to remove it in case the criminals got an injury while trying to break into her house!
How can anyone justify a statement like that?

To the OP - you have the right to defend your property, and there's no set 'right' way of doing it, as a few posters in this thread would have you believe. What Stilover says is true, there are consequences sometimes from these things, so it's really up to the individual how they want to tackle things. But making it as unattractive as possible to steal from your property (who would bother with so much hastle when there are other farms around?) has to be done.
Really, stuff like razor wire and high fences is what you want. That way the people it hurts have no excuse for hurting themselves, but where you have a field with low fences that kids would normally climb while out for a walk, etc, it's obviously not really possible. But just protect stuff with all the usual security and they will soon get bored. If you have guns, you don't need to shoot anyone, you just need to be seen by them checking your land out with a gun in your hand to send them the message... again that it's just more hastle than it's worth. So the best thing you can do is be active. Try and get some security equipment that'll let you know they're there, and make sure they know you're on to them.

i am friends with some of the pikey community as my dad was originally married to one and became friends with a load, the only thing that scares a pikey is geese. they make too much noise and won't leave you alone so its a shame that you can't leave them out.
i think you;'ve done the best thing with the noise cartridges as any loud noise will scare them off and hopefull alert someone nearby, other than that there is nothing you can do. plus gregsti, i guess you haven't met many pikeys, you'd be lucky to make it into a site with any weapons before they do you over yourself, why do you think that the police in our area won't even entertain entering the sites, if its a stolen car there following and it turns into our local site they just carry on and leave them too it.
