Exclamation Wage Slips and shift allowance

Hi

My company has told me I get paid a shift allowance and it is included in my salary.
There is no mention of this in my contract and its not itemised on my wage slip.

I used to do 4 on 4 off a year ago 12 hour days, the we got busy and they asked us to do mon to fri 10 hour days. Now they want me to work a 3 shift pattern of 6-2, 2-10,10-6.

I said I would look at doing the new shifts if I get paid a shift allowance for it. But they have said I already get a allowance frome when i was on 4 on 4 off but thats news to me. Should a shift allowance have to be itemised ?

Help please

May not be itemised on your payslip, but should be in your contract of employment.

Im sure it would have to be mentioned or broke down in one of them.

Thanks for the reply.

They'll just say that you're salary reflects the fact that you work a shift pattern - and that's backed off by the fact you already have.

Not a leg to wobble on....

But day work is different to working nights....

Also when they asked us to do mon to fri 10 hour days my money went up as they class it as im working overtime but its not overtime as its never been a choice, thats our working week.

Surely they cant just drop our money because they want us working nights and a 40 hour week...

No it's not, the work is exactly the same - what makes you think it's different?

Overtime isn't due for working "nights" it's for working in excess of your contracted hours.

Think yourself lucky that you have a job. And i doubt that you very getting a shift allowance for 4 on 4 off. How long do they want to keep you on that shift pattern.

I know what overtime is. What im saying is that we should get a shift allowance for nights as it is unsocialable hours etc

If they say it's included, do they give you an hourly rate? can you ask someone NOT on shifts what they are on?

Trouble with that is pay is not standard across an organisation, if you joined 5 years ago for £30K part of that may have been shift allowance, someone joining last week doing the exact same job for £15K may still have a shift allowance included in their salary.

Have fun at work, if you don't enjoy working there vote with your feet

We get a 10% premium for working nights, but it is fully itemised on the payslip every four weeks.

We get 17% for 6-2 2-10 days and 25% for nights. This should be itemised on your pay slip. If not get your contract out and have a read of it. Try and figure out what your hourly rate is and what your take home is and see if they match with the amount of hours you are doing. This should give you an indication if your shift premium is on there.

It`s not really shift allowance, it`s disturbance allowance which is paid for working night shifts. If you were getting for working days reg. then you were lucky IMO. As for working nights, yes you SHOULD get it. This is how it works in Cadburys anyway. As far as I know, it`s common practise.

It should be itemised, they will normally give you a set ammount of shift allowance per month as its split down over the year, ie if you do a 37 hr week normally then your on a 148hr month and your shift allowance should reflect that monthly total.

It's quite simple really; ask them to let you know what the allowance is and how it is calculated, then take it from there. Oh, and join a union!

I'm surprised it isn't itemised but I'm unaware of the legalities. On the steelworks in Scunny you get a 30% shift premium. You would do a 21 shift pattern with 3 blocks of 7 shifts covering 6-2pm, 10-6am and 2-10pm. Two days off between each and ten days off at the end. Quick turn around are a coont but that's what tue premium is for. As an apprentice I'm currently only doing days, usually 7.30-3.30 with a couple 6-2s like today.

As Jeff said be thankful for the job but get into a union just incase.

Lucky you aren't a paramedic, 12 hour shifts quick turn-arounds to cover "sickness" and a stressful job too !

dunx

P.S. I get 11 hours "shift allowance" a week so I'm sorted...

I think i was getting around 25% extra for working nights when i was building Nissans.

Been a while though so i cant remember the proper figures IIRC it was about 17% for late shift as well.

Saturday morning overtime was fun if you had been working lates or nights that week, even better if it ran on into double time on sunday mornings double time and shift allowance, to paint the factory floors on a sunday morning, then home for a nice beer and a sunday lunch, happy times tbh.

I was a greedy bugger though
