Why is it outrageous? Why should I subsidise someone else's credit card merchant fee because I can pay in cash?
It is absolutely fair that if someone wants to pay on credit they can pay for the privilege!

Loads of companies do this, normally when they know its going to be high value items.
Holidays, insurance... council tax, its because the credit card companies charge companies to make credit card transactions, so these companies inturn put the charge on the customers bill.
When its low value items, the company you purchase from normally take it on the chin, but high value items will cost you.

For instance, the AA will charge you 1.5% to make a credit card payment, this is because the AA are charged 3% from the credit card company, so they half the charges.
This is quite a new thing as credit card companies used to charge the AA 1.5% so AA took it on the chin, but since the increase they split it.
... blame your credit card company.

Both Credit and Debit cards are the same, its the card issuers that charge to make the transactions.
Ryan Air/EasyJet for instance will charge you for using a debit card or credit card

The rip off comes because the big companies are NOT charged what they tell you. I sell a few things and accept credit cards and am charged 1.3% of transaction for credit cards and I think 30p for a debit card. I argue every time I pay my electric bill when they charge me 2% as I know they don't pay that, nearer 1% I would guess. So 1% extra on a few million quid collected is a nice little Christmas bonus....

The OP is objecting to the charge when using a DEBIT card. They never used to charge when they had to open an envelope, pick up the cheque that has fallen on the floor, check that it was signed, showed the correct amount, and then put it in an outtray for further processing, send it to the bank with someone to pay it in, etc. Now they charge because they can blame someone else, even though overall it must be cheaper to accept a card transaction.
Now BT charges if you pay by direct bank transfer, for doing the square root of FA. Now that really takes the P.
