Amazon is your best bet for value for money I'm afraid

http://www.amazon.co.uk/HDMI-KING-In...5338912&sr=8-4

Even if doesn't work its only £3!

or for better peice of mind: http://www.amazon.co.uk/PRO-GOLD-RED...338912&sr=8-10

Looked in Maplin the other week and their prices were stupid...and it was ****ty quality cable too! Their "premium" stuff was a blatent rip off (fancy gold, connectors, but no doubt crappy cable sheilding, thin conductors, and poorly crimped connections) - and no better that whats in those amazon links..

Curious to know what people think about the 'new' 1.4 cables? I've been told to just make sure there are gold connectors and quality shielding - stop worrying about the version they're compatible for

Gold plated connectors is pure marketing gimmickry; Remember bling sells (same with silicone insulation or braided coverings)

Quality of cable, how its crimped and shortest length is the key.

But you can't tell how good it is without chopping off the connector to look at the conductors, same with the crimping; you have to destroy the connector to find out.

The biggest issue I've heard of is problems with the CEC commands (viera link, bravia link etc), not noted it myself though.

On the shelf in Tesco.
There was a comparison done on one of the gadget type shows recently and the conclusion was to save your money, a £5 one does the job just as good as the £50 cable.

As I understand it an HDMI cable transfers information in the digital domain -which means the signal is either on or off .
Providing the cable is intact then cost is irrelevant as the resulting picture will be the same for a $5 cable as for a $500 cable.
I'm not even sure shielding for a digital cable is that relevant either .

Years ago I paid £100 for a monster 5m componet lead expecting the picture to be superb on my projector, as it happened it wasn't any better than the £10 lead I was currently using so I returned it sharpish

Maplins do a quality hdmi that is already 1.4 compatible, better safe than sorry.

To a point, the cable is insignificant; But there are issues with longer cable lengths.

For example, I'm running gigabit LAN on cat5 cable (not even cat5E ). When as we know, everyone in the IT industry says you should use cat6 cable. Truth is it's down to the cable length, and the devices either end of it. In my case the cable isn't that long, and the switches on either end clean up the signal well enough for it to function ok.

Admittedly gigabit LAN is not as simple as a few ons and offs down a cable; its far more complex as it uses five level encoding/modulation (PAM-5) to form a 4 volt peak to peak carrier wave; which to all intents is like transmitting an analogue signal. So for it to function over some naff twisted pair is pretty impressive.

HDMI data transmission is encoded using a 8b/10b data stream thats not too different to that found on a SATA hard drive interface, so in a pure sense it is a digital signal.

Now crack open your computer and look at that thin and nasty SATA cable. The only major difference is the use of rigid wire conductors and its short length. Compare that to some of Curry's finest monster cable

SATA's major limitation is its ability to work over long cable length. As such its quite happy to work inside a PC where the cable is short. HDMI is no different; Short runs up to 2metres are easy, but start pushing it further though and capacitance and resistance causes issues on the signal, and this is the only instance I would ever reccomend a higher quality cable for HDMI. And even then I would be highly cynical of anything over £50 unless for extremely long cables (10metres).

Yep 10metres is generally regarded as the length when upgrading is worthy of consideration. Saying that I have a 1 meter Chord cable worth £90. Offers brilliant pictures and sound.

But so do the others and is no different to my £5 cable. (It was free with a magazine subscription)

Thats actually very surprising as Component is an Analogue signal, either your Monster cable was **** or you cheap leads were absolutely excellent! Back when the Xbox360 came out I bought a Monster Component 360 cable yoke and the difference in colour and depth were superb!

Odd as it may seem, most major manufacturers 1.3a cables are the same as 1.4 and already incorporated in the additional features. I defo know that this is the case with QED.
