HMRC Overpayments and Underpayments
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11186397
Six million people in UK have overpaid or underpaid tax
David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said those who had underpaid would be given time to pay
Nearly six million people in the UK have paid the wrong amount of tax.
About £2bn was underpaid via the Pay as You Earn (PAYE) system in the past two years, with about 1.4 million people owing an average of £1,500 each.
But £1.8bn has also been overpaid and some 4.3 million people will get a rebate because they have paid too much.
Treasury minister David Gauke said that in the current financial climate, the government was not in a position to "just wave goodbye" to the money owed.
He said the government had inherited the problem and the PAYE system - which was created in the 1940s - was struggling to cope with modern working patterns.
So are you an over or under then

I'll wager any under/over-payment that I'll be in the underpayment minority!
That's called hedging your bets I think.

I find it absolutely fecking unbelievable that there wasn't a decent manual check system in place that flagged up that the new computer was screwing up. Are people that stupid that they think the software is always right?

Not sure they know where I live at the moment, had nothing from them since moving, don't see why I should have to tell them as I'd have thought the government should know where I'm living
Unless of course they owe me money (unlikely)
Think I'll go through the process of doing a tax return for last year just to make sure it all roughly stacks up.

Apparently under law there is no requirement to pay them back as it is their fault. See here:

Will people like me who just have one job and let the employer sort it out be affected by this do you think? Or is it more likely going to be those with more than one job, company cars etc....?

This doesn't surprise me, one bit. They really are a brainless lot.
My Mum has been overpaying tax on her meagre pension for the last 6 years. One of the pension payers has been using BR instead of the issued tax code. She only mentioned it to me in May.
I have spoken to them 3 times over the last few months. They have agreed she has overpaid by a substantial amount, but she still has not received the money.

They are applying the new code now and it has back dated to the start of this tax year. So that was sorted swiftly.
It's the 6 years prior that she needs to get the money for, and that can only come from the IR. Think I will chase them up again on Thursday, when I go for my weekly cuppa and chinwag

The report said it would primarily affect people who have moved employment over the last couple of years so having been with my employer for the last 18 I'm expecting(hoping) to be unaffected

Odds on, I'll be in the underpaid section by a massive amount
Don't see how given i'm PAYE, and its THEIR job to make sure everything is correct!!!
Hang on though, who was in charge of the treasury a few years ago, and
made systems so complex people struggled to understand them
Class action anyone??

I still owe them around 3k to be honest, so it makes no difference to me, its just a different number, on the end of another number, that i cant afford to pay them at the moment

Did you call them and tell them? They are usually fairly reasonable when it comes to you paying them if you are prepared to make an effort. 80 quid a month for three years maybe?????? If you don't call them they will have you in court by the end of November, at which point you can pay up in 28 days or have them go through your finances to decided how much you can afford. Given that they are basically 100% incompetent, letting them make a decision might be a bad idea

Seems like it's another case of inconsistency in the way they deal with things, depending on what office you talk to
