Not good. £12m may be a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of things, but it's still money taken from everyone... in return for what? Surely even the small sum would be better in the health service or even going towards debt payments.

Look how much money they have! - they seem to find enough money when it comes to compensation....

Another ancient and out of touch religion and religious leader and a huge cost to the UK taxpayers - money that could be better spent on vulnerable children for example!
If the pope wants to come here and Catholics want his to come then perhaps they could and indeed should pay for it!
Just does not seem right in this day and age!

The one thing that worries me our Royal Family who I have great respect for must cringe at the recent outcomes, the greek connection was known for his preferences going back years ago, this was told to me by a Warrent officer who used to be his driver into Soho years ago.

People tend to forget that, like it or not, the Pope is also a head of state (or head of a 'sovereign juridical entity under international law', if you prefer), and not just a religious leader, and on that basis it would be very difficult for our government to refuse to cover some of the costs of security and hospitality during his visit.
The only real way to prevent this happening in future would be to put diplomatic pressure on Italy and/or the UN to renegociate the Vatican's status as an independent state, which is unlikely to happen any time soon.

One could be forgiven for thinking that you are anti-Catholic even!
