I think the Catholic church could afford to foot the bill itself ?

Or allow non believers to 'opt out' of their tax dollars paying for it ?

Looking forwards to the disruption it's gonna cause too!
We pay for Blair's protection to book signings, might's well pay for the pope too.

Not good. £12m may be a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of things, but it's still money taken from everyone... in return for what? Surely even the small sum would be better in the health service or even going towards debt payments.

Look how much money they have! - they seem to find enough money when it comes to compensation....

CHURCH leaders in America's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese are to pay a record $660 million (£325 million) to compensate hundreds of children who were molested by paedophile priests.
Source

Catholic nuns responsible for child abuse last night offered to pay their victims £116million in compensation.

The Sisters of Mercy is one of 18 orders of Catholic priests, brothers and nuns in the Republic of Ireland who ran schools and workhouses for generations of deprived children until the 1990s.
Source

THE Catholic Church has paid at least $6 million to victims of pedophile priests in Maitland-Newcastle diocese, including some of the greatest known individual compensation payouts in Australia to children sexually abused by clergy.
Source

The Roman Catholic Church in Birmingham has been ordered to pay £32,500 damages to a man who was abused by a priest in Coventry more than 30 years ago.

Another ancient and out of touch religion and religious leader and a huge cost to the UK taxpayers - money that could be better spent on vulnerable children for example!

If the pope wants to come here and Catholics want his to come then perhaps they could and indeed should pay for it!

Just does not seem right in this day and age!

The one thing that worries me our Royal Family who I have great respect for must cringe at the recent outcomes, the greek connection was known for his preferences going back years ago, this was told to me by a Warrent officer who used to be his driver into Soho years ago.

I'd rather spend the 12m on giving Maxine Carr a new identity.

At least she only covered up for one sicko retard !

People tend to forget that, like it or not, the Pope is also a head of state (or head of a 'sovereign juridical entity under international law', if you prefer), and not just a religious leader, and on that basis it would be very difficult for our government to refuse to cover some of the costs of security and hospitality during his visit.

The only real way to prevent this happening in future would be to put diplomatic pressure on Italy and/or the UN to renegociate the Vatican's status as an independent state, which is unlikely to happen any time soon.

Very interesting all this information that you seem to be party to. Have you any evidence that the "Greek connection" or even for that matter the Pope are paedophiles. You must be able to back it up I imagine, before they start chasing you!

One could be forgiven for thinking that you are anti-Catholic even!

Perfectly sound points Paul, but do you think that the religion encourages or even permits that sort of behaviour, or is it down to individuals?
