The unit in charge of speed cameras in Wiltshire and Swindon is to close, with the loss of 40 jobs.
So sad in these times of austerity

How very sad indeed....
Now, to compound that, all I really need is to see Dorset go the same way (they're thinking about it) and the lovely people that are responsible for flashing me for a positively shocking 36 in a 30 - and resultant pending Driver Awareness Course (thinly disguised coffer liner) - out on their ears as well.
Oxford have already made the same decision (though I've NEVER found a working Gatso camera in the whole of Oxfordshire) - so Oxon / Wilts is becoming the place to drive safely!

I hope the money they save is used to fund a few extra traffic officers.
I hate cameras as they only detect speeding, taking no account of other poor driving practices nor indeed whether that arbitrary speed is appropriate to the conditions.
A good traffic cop should be pulling dangerous drivers and exercising discretion as to how he deals with motorists.

They could cut police resources devoted to traffic by 50% and I would not moan. It's a waste of resources compared to the returns and the quality of peoples lives.

I got a ticket for 35 in a 30 last week from South Yorkshire's finest. I'm hoping I get a SAC instead of 3 points and a fine - I suspect that's the only way they can keep the money as well?

Can you deny the logic of that?

I do deny it Les, not the logic, but the application of it: Because the way the authorities and campaigners use it as a black and white approach to road safety.
We all know that bad driving causes accidents. Nothing else. A good driver would be driving at a speed appropriate to the conditions and the road and their vehicle, regardless of what posted speed limit there is and if cameras were present or not.
What we have now is ditzy drivers, darting round roads on wet roads, tailgating in heavy traffic at 40mph on nankang tyres in a 40mph speed limit.. Then wondering went they crashed..because "they were not speeding".
The speed is the last of their problems; its their inability to calculate what is safe.

Agree Al.
However, a sad fact is that probably 80% of the drivers in the UK have such a level of driver training and therefore skill that a blanket way to make the roads safer is to slow everyone down.
In an ideal world, you would have to demonstrate a level of competency, far greater than the current one off test, in order to be allowed on the road. At a stroke, this would halve the casualty rate but probably mean that only 50% of the current drivers would be allowed on the roads. I doubt society would accept that consequence.
So in order to try and limit the impact of crap drivers, everything is dumbed down to their level.

Like schools these days sadly. Don Palmer has a good grading system:
1. Drivers who crash into things.
2. Drivers who get crashed into.
3. Drivers who do neither of the above.
I'd like to see 1's having at least to retake their test and then drive round in a high-vis car, 2's be sent on a long tedious awareness course and 3's be offered a genuine reduction in their insurance costs. Please.
