Default household insurance claim

just discovered that the pipe behind the shower has been leaking,must of been for about 12 moths or more,floor in bathroom,kitchen and dineing room are wet,and there are patches of damp on the walls,lifted a small piece of concreate in kitchen,and its just like sand underneath!
we are insured with sun alience,not contents though,anyone had a claim with them?we are waiting for asseser,is there anything we need to do,or know before he arrives?

Had a similar claim after two years in a new build house, Egg paid up. The plumber hadn't connected the pipes behind the shower properly so it was leaking inside the wall for some time, but the builder (who was also a solicitor) didn't want to know and NHBC was as useful as a chocolate fireguard.

the plumber that did it has died,so who knows what will happen?cant find the bill either,looks like walls might have to come down,laminate floor,tiles,all the bathroom,all the kitchen.

nightmare!!!

Hi Stuart,

I'm a technical insurance claims advisor. Depends on precise policy wording, but should be covered.

Possible the adjuster may make reference to "gradually operating cause" not being covered, but if so tell him to check his policy wording - this exclusion normally applies only to "accidental damage" claims, whereas this claim would fall within one of the standard insured perils, ie burst (aka escape of water from the domestic heating/water system).

Hope this helps, should be fine as I say.

o the policy we can find,it states.


cover protection
contents/buildings
insurance the contents/strtucture of your home agaist
damage by specified causes.


full accidental damage the structure/components of your home
against damage not caused on purpose



cant find the upto date policy,but iam sure its the same,an asseser has rang and left o message for me to ring her tomorrow


the 14 year old suffered from sports ashma,but it got worse 12 months ago,there is that much mold under the bath that this could of caused it iam told.
