A pioneer in the snooker world, he bridges the gap between the old guard and the Ronnie o'Sullivans of today. Read his autobiography to see how he shook up the world of snooker, and alienated nearly all the old players. Funny old thing.

He also threatened to get Dennis Taylor 'kneecapped'!

RIP

I saw him at Manchester Airport, not long ago, he looked like a Paul Whitehouse Character, a little Leprachaun in a black suit, he was collecting his Cue off the luggage carousel, a little lonely looking figure, didnt twig at first but he did look familiar.

He lived near our school in Gatley in the eighties, saw him about in some flash motors, nice big place but he screwed it up, apparently used to scratch a living hustling around the snooker halls in Manchester.

Always a bit sad when big names fall from grace like that.

A few years ago I was in a rather shady pub whilst he was playing for pints, thought he was a waster then and my thoughts haven't changed.

He was the one who made snooker popular and gingered up the whole scene. He died young but not surprising with his lifestyle. I wished he was still playing.

Tragic end for him, really. He was quite a character in his day but used and abused his money. Ended up a rather sad case. RIP.

As a tribute, perhaps rather than just burying him, they should pot him, big cue, tricky shot, bounce him off the side of the Church, glance the Hearse and plop, into the corner plot.

Apparently he was clear of the throat cancer but he refused to eat and died of malnutrition.

I used to love watching him play.

from a career with plenty of money, cars, women to starving to death in a dingy bedsit in sandy row. **** me that is no way to go. and all the hypocritical cvnts will be at the funeral saying how great he was, he was a good friend blah blah blah. where the **** were you when he needed you the most. No way for anyone to die in a supposed enlightened society.

sorry, really boils my **** this does at how two faced people are.

I actually played him about 20 years ago.
He was doing an exhibition in a place in N.Ireland, and my number was drawn to play him.
Basically he broke by smashing the pack.
I potted 4 ***** - 2 reds, 2 colours.
I didn't get any more shots as he potted everything.

then the decision should have been made for him. 61 is no age to die. To starve to death in a western country is ridiculous. Social Services must have known how vunerable he was, where is the back up care.

Sinky - I'd say that because of the alcohol abuse people turned a blind eye.
I personally know of a case where a man was in hospital being treated for alcohol abuse.
That person died in hospital through lack of care, and the attitude of the staff while he was alive was shocking to say the least

i know, i know. elderly vulnerable people going into hospital and coming out malnourished, kids being neglected and starving to death. Higgy had his demons no doubt, i just don't like to think that absolutely no one cared. i know the health service is in shambles and they are at breaking point, it just saddens me that he died alone knowing that no one was coming to help him.

I agree. It is a horrible thought he was gasping his last, with no one seeming to care.
We will never know if he wanted it this way and isolated himself from the rest of the world.
I hope he is happy where he has gone

The Hurricane made snooker. I could not think of anything worse than watching Terry Griffiths, Eddy Charlton, Steve Davis, Ray Reardon etc but along came Higgy from up the road and wow snooker was great. You just never new what Alex was gonna do next.

RIP Alex
