Question Double glazed windows

2 or 3 of our opening ones dont open when you turn the handle - its just click , click ,click

2 of them within weeks of being put in , at the time ( called him back ) and he said they needed new handle . Now the one downstairs has gone , quite old mind and seen a lot of salt air , being next to the sea.

Is this a job i can do myself - first id have to open the bleeders of course ,somehow

Hi if your windows are just normal then whats happened is the 'spag' is broken. Open one of your other windows and look in the open sash below the handle is there a mechanism with two spuds or mushrooms which move side to side as you turn the handle. If so this lock or spag as it's known is broken.

If you have shot bolts coming out of each side of the sash then you have a Saracen type of lock.

The first is most common and that problem is very common. Easily fixed if you can find somewher to get the parts.

I work for a company called Windowfix and we do all PVC and Aluminium window and door maintenance and repairs. Where are you ?

When this happened to me, I found a place via the local rag that did window and door repairs. Cheap at twice the price

Hi

unscrew the handle - 2 screws - and hopefully the handle will just pull off. You having mentioned living near the sea could mean it's rusted in.

Lets say the handle pulls off ok. Bearing in mind which way the handle turned to open, put a screwdriver in and try to turn the gearbox with it.
Try a few times then failing this get a hammer and put it into the lock where the handle spindle goes and try to knock the whole lock sideways.

Important thing here is to hit it the right way. Without being there it's hard to know but looking at one of your windows which does open will show you which way the spud or mushroom needs to go to come out of the keeper in the frame.

We do this type of repair for £45 and would leave the window perfect with a new lock fitted. After that any further windows would be charged at £25 each.

So it might be worth trying to get a window fixer bloke in.

Good luck.

The blumin first window 'broke' about 2 weeks after they were put in !

got him back admittedly about a month after this maybe and he wanted to charge us / order a new handle - not heard anything since

my fault for not chasing him - but i doubt ill be back to them for anything again
