It is actually the phone, it gets screwed up, top quality from apple again
It sometimes has difficulty dropping from 3G to 2G, not a network issue, hence if you use the airplane mode to reset the set it works fine again

Nope, i'm still on my iphone 3g with os 3.1.2 and it works perfectly and is exactly why I am not 'upgrading' the software or the hardware because it does everything I want from it. All the haters on the other threads who have no experience of them make me laugh.

This happens on Orange too. I have a Nokia E71, ring my brother who's standing next to me, full signal, straight to answer phone. Instantly cancel the call, try again, this time goes through, phone rings.
I reckon its more to do with user's free minutes, and sneaky algrythmes from the phone server provider to burn up free mins, etc etc. By leaving a voice mail, he then pays to listen to it.
So, not just for O2 / Iphone, but orange / nokia too

I think only a 3G connection can accept a call at the same time as using the data network, if that's the case then a background task will cause the calls to go to voicemail.

I think the problem here lies with O2 as other networks dont seem to suffer so the iPhone can't really be the cause if this one.

Indeed but it means that it doesn't affect every iphone 3G if mine doesn't do it therefore I would not agree its the handset at fault and it's the network at fault.

Other issues could be on the edge of a 3G cell and its busy (they are flexible cells and shrink with more useage, but they should get handover to 2g) hence why I think its a handset issue.

It seems if youre using the internet on a connection other than 3G/WiFi then the calls will automatically go to voicemail. I've just tested it and it definitely happens like that.
Backs up a recent email I got from o2 support too.
"It can be possible that if your phone
is connected to the Internet then the calls may get diverted to the
Voicemail."

Yes, its not a problem with O2, having used plenty of works phones (all O2 ) and never had an issue, this includes my Iphone 3GS, though its range sucks and needs to be in a good area due to the crappy antenna, if you go hiking, take another phone
Iphone issue, been reported on AT&T in the states, no doubt will be reported on orange and vodafone also, just that the last 2 have not had the phone very long

Only 3G can sustain voice and data at the same time. It was a selling point for me when the iPhone 3G came out and a fact that the more negative factor pointed out when the iPhone was released with only an Edge connection.
