Guaranteed to be empty, but the seller is looking for more than the local pikeys have to offer IMHO

Maybe in the "old 'n' days" but never seen anything modern (last 50 years) filled with sand otherwise you could you not just puncture a hole in the bottom wait for the sand to come out and carry the safe away?

You lot might be surprised. My mate in France works for a company which opens safes. That's his trade.

He regularly buys up ones like this, opens them, refurbishes the mechanism, sprays them and sells them on at a profit.

He once was given a "broken" safe that wouldn't open, by an old man, and when he got it open there was a diamond ring in a jewellery case in it. He took the ring back to the old guy who had forgotten all about it, thinking the safe was empty as it hadn't been used in years, and the old guy told him to keep it.

Worth over €1000, his wife now wears it.

I think it's a great thing to Auction .... only those without a sense of humour or adventure think the world is too serious for something like this

Aye, he spends a lot of time in banks, opening safes that are broken, or have had their keys lost, or safe deposit boxes where the owner has died and the keys not found.

He also removes and refits ATM's.

I once asked him how long it would take him to break into the best safe he know sof, and he answered about half an hour.

I expressed surprise at such a short time and he shrugged and said, "C'est mon metier, (It's my work)."

Form an old job I used to have, some ATM's are easily done in under 30 seconds, if you know where to cut.

OOh thats quite close to me. Anyone fancy making a bid and I'll go pick it up? 2 conditions:

1. 50 50 split if it contains anything valuable
2. Bidder disposes of safe once emptied

Seriously though it's quite intriguing and a fun item to bid on.
