After Tomtom, what comes next?

After Tomtom, what comes next?
Some of you will remember my wife's Tomtom satnav went t*ts up last month. Tried to effect a repair with them, but ended up wiping the maps as they were corrupted, ("oh dear, sir, you should have backed them up........") FFS, why didn't the instructions TELL me to then?
Anyway, new maps are £50, so I may buy a complete unit instead, and it WON'T be a Tomtom The on/off switch is also dicky.
Garmin? Anything else?
I want European maps plus UK and the wife likes lane advice at motorway junctions.
Any advice welcome.

Do CoPilot do a stand alone unit, or is it just maps for phone devices?
I ask as CoPilot has been fantastic on my iPhone compared to what Tomtom was on my old Sony Ericsson. Best £26.99 I've ever spent

I seem to remember in earlier threads that the Tom Tom was recommended by most people. I might get a sat nav myself and would be interested in recommendations at the moment.

I have got http://www.amazon.co.uk/TomTom-540-S.../dp/B001F0Q91S
Its very good the HD traffic is worth the £60 a year for me but probably not for normal drivers, I tried the Garmin for the first time in Tescos a few days ago and it felt so out of date.
i have had all of the TomTom versions (300 , 700, 510, 520) the 540 is considerably quicker at picking up a signal than the older models (ie if you go through blackwall tunnel the new 540 picks up the signal straight away when you come out the old ones don't work out where you are until you stop for a couple of minutes.
Voice is very loud on the 540 and the google search (you need the traffic HD add on for this) it is amazing when you first use it.
I only change when it gets stolen, never had one go wrong yet!

Lol like I say too many to choose from. As far as I am concerned, as long as it gets me there I'm happy.
The Tom Tom I am using in the USA at the moment is annoying the hell out of me with it's "keep right, then turn left" crap lol.
As a preference Garmin is my weapon of choice, but as for model of any nav device it all depends what you want from it. Lane assist, live traffic, free updates, Bluetooth hands free etc.
Getting from a to b is my priority with nave, so the cheapest clear one suits me fine. If uk maps were cheaper I would be bringing a garmin home for sure.

Got the missus one similar to this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/188955#reviews Allegedly you can install and run TomTom on it, and if you were to already own a licence for TomTom I can't see how it would be breaking any laws

I bought a refurbished tom Tom 715 for this trip, for about 60 quid on bay, with uk and us maps, cradle and charger. Has built in handsfree... That will do me lol

I've got TomTOm on my phone, and it's pretty good.
Most annoying thing is that John Cleese tells me FOUR times every instruction...
THere is just a bit too much advance warning.
Its just too annoying sometimes and I just want to throw the damn thing out the window!

I have owned a TomTom for years now, it's been OK ..... the battery doesn't hold its charge longer than a few minutes now

We just got back from Spain today. I bought the above linked Garmin nuvi 1490T for the trip and its worked perfectly. 5" screen, text to speech, lane assist, speed cameras etc. I bought one of the 1st Tom Tom classics years ago when they came out and it still works fine but it was going to cost me to upgrade to European maps hence I invested in a new one.

I want Google Nav to arrive on the iPhone, I have a feeling it won't though.

It is a Tom Tom 720 with the standard desk top cradle that comes with it. I bought a flush fitting cig lighter to female usb adaptor, a right angled usb to female usb cable and connected that to the desk top cable. I had to pull out the dash which was very easy and that was it. Around £12 all round and no wires cut/soldered etc. and all totally removable.
It is a tight fit but the ash tray flap closes and everything is concealed, making it look a lot tidier than with the suction cap.
