Nights are pants I need sleep Anyone else work nights???????

I DID work nights, two week of nights then two weeks of days

had a letter yesterday saying i was to work days only, so thats a £400 a month pay cut so i cant afford to work there anyone got a job

I do a four on four off shift system, two days two nights ect.. then a 10 off at the end of every third set. I get along with the nights alright, straight to bed when i get back in the morning and wake up at 4pm. Seems to work fine for me, i think im nocturnal though.

I work:
A week of 6am-2pm, then 4 nights of 8pm-6am, then a week of 2pm-10pm.

I love nights! If anyone is every off, I will always cover the night shift. Just seems to suit my life style of being a lazy ****. I hate getting up early for work though.......like now!!

12.5 for me too, every Fri/Sat/Sun. Just waiting for the wife and kid to vacate the bed so I can get some sleep, although I'll probably get plenty tonight as I know there's nowt to do at w*rk this weekend. Watched Mock The Week, Shameless and Jonathan Ross last night whilst getting paid

I used to work a 3 shift rota

week one = earlys, around 7 till 3
week two = nights, around 11 till 7
week three = lates around 3 till 11

Did this for the best part of 3 years, it totally messed my body clock up, seriously, it can not be good for you, just as you are getting used to one shift, it changes and you are on a different one, i was taking tablets to keep me awake during night shifts, and then tablets to put me asleep after them, totally crap!

After coming off them and leaving the job, i turned from somebody who always used to be able to function with 5-6 hours kip, to somebody who NEEDS his 8 hours every night, or you will be hearing about it

One of my mates i used to work with has just had his changed to..

2 days, 2 nights, then 4 days off, he says it is even worse

Finishing nights and going onto lates had a little bonus of getting what would appear to be a nice little freebie long weekend, if you could stay awake, but nobody ever could

Lates and nights recurring....

All the others on the team did earlys, lates & nights recurring.

It was:

Week 1

1:30 - 9pm Mon - Fri

Week 2

9-6 Mon - Thurs (Friday as overtime lol)

The kicker was you only got one 10 minute break on the earlys / lates, and

either 2 - 10 minute breaks or 1 20 min break on the nights.

All the other guys on the shift pattern, did

1 week Earlys
1 week Lates
1 week Nights

if i wanted an early, you'd think id asked for the secret of life lol, i think in the two years i was there, i got 2 early shifts lol

The good bits... few, but -- the Friday night shift, was double time from midnight till 6am , and the overall salary was high.

The bad bits... lots, The change from nights to lates was a killer, and the short breaks were murder lol..

oh and my first marriage went south as well , the shift work did not help.. (turned out almost all of the other blokes on the night shift were divorced as well )

2x 7am til 17
2x 17 til 3am
2x 11pm til 7am

The four off, though really it's 3 and a half days off cause you're sleeping most of the first rest day off after nights.
I like the night shifts, hate having to get up for the earlys and have a love/hate thing with the lates. They're not really late they're half nights.

I find you have to be very behaved with your sleep patterns trying to adapt to the shifts. After doing this pattern since last november I'm pretty used to it now.

Once I adjusted to nights I quite enjoyed it... I became very adept at grabbing 20min power naps. Could sleep literally "to order" in chunks fitted around kids, school, work, shopping etc.

At my old job I spent 3 1/2 years on nights. The shift patterns were 6-2/2-10 mon-fri, 6-6 sat-sun and a couple 6-2/2-10 during the week or permanent 10-6 nights (sun-thurs or mon-fri).

I used to like working permanent nights sun-thurs as I had all friday and sat off and just slept in on sunday till about dinner.

Worst thing about nights was being restricted to when I could have a drink etc. Working 8-4pm currently means if I wanna have a bottle of beer at home on a night I can.

Will be going onto some weird euro shift pattern soon though as my apprenticeship develops. Shift premiums available for working all manner of hours and a little 'un on the way makes it a no brainer

Both my lads, one working his way through uni, the other, an out of work plater/welder, work nights regular.
The company they work for expect them to drive between 3-6 hours somewhere, do a 12 hour night shift, then drive home. The drive is unpaid and costed at £0.15 per mile. For the 12 hour night shift, they get £6.50 an hour.

Who says no-one is making owt from this recession?

I used to work,

week 1: 6am-6pm 4days
week 2: 6pm-6am 4days

and repeat above, done that for 12yrs.
Thats was straight 12hrs work with no tea-breaks or lunch-breaks allowed, no newspapers or any other reading material allowed, no mobiles phones or incoming phonecalls allowed. Working under cctv all the time.

Genuine question:

How did your employers get away with that then? There must be something really "hush hush" going on as unless I'm mistaken that contravenes nearly all working time regulations with regards breaks

I worked for a printing company, just printing the run of the mill blue chip companies stuff.
The boses were complete *****, they wanted there pound of flesh from everyone. The printing unions where involved but done **** all about it. It was known in the printing industry how the company treated their staff throughout Scotland and always struggled to get new staff.

I could go into a long story about it all, but its old news now as the company went bust 2yrs ago.
All I will say is one of the bosses got pulled up on charges for bully and assaulting one of the apprentices

Hmm, harsh indeed.

But surely breaking laws such as the above isn't just a union thing, it's breaking the laws of the land with regards employment. A lot more severe than just a grievance or something. I'm astounded they were a business and people knew about it. Even more astounded folk didn't just milk them for every penny in an easily won court situation if it was as clear cut law breaking as you say mate

The drive home after a nightshift is the worst, you struggle through the night, body clock still used to working days or lates, then you walk out the factory doors to fecking blinding sunshine, arghhhhhggghhgghghghghhggh.

I was quite lucky in that i could get home in around 20 mins if i really toed it up the dual carrigeway, one of my mates live a further 20 mins past my address, he pulled up outside his house once in the layby, and promptly fell asleep poor ****** never even made it into the house

I couldn't w*rk M-F 9-5 again though I love knowing that from 6am on Monday my life is my own until 6pm Friday Everywhere I go is quiet, no queues, no tossers (well, fewer), banks and Post Offices open and I have time to use them, supermarkets quiet etc etc. I do miss not being able to go out and socialise and as a result have lost touch with most of my mates

The money to be truthful, were I stay the average wage is £14k.
I was earning £36k, there is not a lot of jobs going up here.
So you learn to put up with anything to get a good living.

I must say, even though shifts suck, I totally agree with that ^^^. My 6 days off compensate for the tiredness and permanent sh1tty feeling

Get into it after 3 nights, well on my way now to getting home, bonus is I work for 2 weeks, get home for 2 weeks, back for 2 weeks then off for 4 weeks. Luckily for me its my turn for my 4 weeks off.

Used to work night when i worked for Corus and i don't miss it but i do miss the money.
