Default Legal DVD Ripping

Hi guys,

I have a new 500Gb laptop, and I own a lot of movies. My thoughts were to copy the "top 20" to the laptop but as usual nothing seems as easy as it does in my head.

1.) Is it worth rippping them to DVD or is it just as easy to carry 20 DVD's around in a wallet? (Never ripped before, is there an advantage?)

2.) Best free ripper on the web? DIVX downloaded but perhaps I am being thick... no option to rip the DVD unless I upgrade and pay???

TIA

1: I have movies loaded onto my computer and iPhone for those boring moments in a hotel.

2: DVDShrink is pretty good.

No-one else? DVD Shrink wants money, DIVX seems to want money before it does anything, Xilisoft DVD Ripper may work but it keeps asking for money as well.

I don't mind paying a few quid, I just don't want to pay few quid and then realise I have bought a dud.

Don't you guys burn your DVD's to pc?

Dvd shrink is free, http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ . Its a good little program, I then use AutoGK to convert to XVID which is a smaller filesize than dvd but keeps the quality. http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads

Try googling for Autogk. It might seem complicated but you can just go with the default options or just read the short tutorial.

I've used it quite a bit and it's free and it works well.

Shrink DVD plays without sound :-(
Rat DVD fails at the conversion stage, "Windows has encountered an error and had to close..."

Sony Vaio, fairly good spec, i5 processor, 4Gb RAM, Blu ray player (so a good graphics card)

I just want some fvcking movies on the hard drive and it's driving me fvcking nuts, WTF can't there be a simple fvcking solution!!!

Sorry, rant over.

Handbrake doesn't seem to work with Windows 7, I can't close the windows pop up dialog boxes... which ... let me tell you, is more annoying than having a pitbull biting your ***** in half.

This pc is 3 days old and all I have installed is Office 2007, that works perfect... any ripping s/w I install appears to be telling me to go fvck myself.

What am I doing wrong?

You need to get some codecs installed. Search for klite mega codec pack, works a treat.

If you own a lot of movies already, why rip them to DVD again putting a `top 20` on your HDD will use up around 100gb of space unless you convert the files to something smaller

That's where autogk comes in handy, you can convert the DVD files to xvid which are usually the size of an audio cd (700mb) compared to a DVD (4.7gb) and still retain the quality. I usually converts film to about 1400mb, so 20 films convertedto xvid will take up between 25 - 35 gigs on your hard drive. You must have the necessary codecs installed to be able to watch the converted films which is why I recommend the k-lite mega codec pack.

The real DVDShrink is free, but hard to find now and likely to be some sort of MPAA-sponsored malware.

CloneDVD will be best if youre going to pay. Otherwise DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink, but both need sourcing with care as they were bullied into hiding years ago.

I've been struggling with the same thing. I couldn't get Handbrake to work direct from the DVD - I kept getting badly corrupted audio and video preumably because some protection was getting in the way.

I'm now using AnyDVD (the trial version, but I will buy the full one) to rip the files from the DVD then using Handbrake to convert to MPEG. VLC plays the resulting files fine, but I don't have an H.264 codec for Windows MP so it won't play them. The file sizes and quality is pretty good - Hot Fuzz is about 1.2GB.

I'm doing the conversion on a server running Windows Vista.
