Default Cyclists

To all the bike jockies out there.

Do you cycle during rush hour?

As if traffic problems were not bad enough on the main roads.
I enountered 3 this morning all around 7.00 - 7.20 cycling on a main route into Belfast
All inside lane traffic had to move to outside lane causing unnecessary tailbacks even at that time.

Very selfish thing to do in my book.

I ride bikes but save it for the country lanes & off road on an evening or weekends,
never found riding in traffic appealing.

The majority of cyclists are dead on, its the minority who right 2/3 abreast down country roads and expect not to have pieces of their brain smeared over my chrome grill that annoy me.

Motorcyclists on the other hand, knuckle dragging idiots on the most part.

There are two places were I see cyclists in London.

1). Underneath bendy buses
2). Flying over top of a car that has turned left when they are undertaking it.

Cycling 2 abreast on a country road is a great idea....at least the car has to give room, and often slow down.

Often I'll move back to single file, as one approaches especially if traffic is coming the other way.

On a busy A road, I'd not ride 2 abreast.

Cyclists aint that bad,

As a 'fuel saving measure' I decided to start cycling the 10 miles to work.
Day 1 - great ride in with a couple of mates, brilliant cross country ride home.

Day 2 - Obviously being 6ft 3 makes me invisible as some old tw@t thought he'd run his wing mirror through my leg and arm. And he gave false details at the scene. Luckily i got his reg number! And the police actually did somthing bout it!

Aint cycled in since, so shes geting a whack of miles put on her, but she still looks awesome!

I meant which ones cyclist or motorbike

Because if you mean cyclist - I pay to drive on the road - they don't
So therefore the logic is that because they don't pay then they don't have any rights and I'm entitiled to run them over if I wish to do so

You don't pay to drive on the roads.

Since VED is based on emmission, then we pay the same as any car that is below 100mg CO₂ g/km

I pay VED too, I just make more use of the roads with different types of transport.

that may be the case but if they want to kill themselves, I'd rather they did it nowhere near my car as I don't have full protected NCB yet.

Motorcyclists seem to have some sort of built in retardation/deathwish that activates once they hit rushhour traffic.

OK - lets get this straight. Are you a cyclist then?

I do actually pay to drive on the road - you dont full stop and nor are you required by law to do so.

I cycle a fair bit. 100 miles a week....just for fun.

I do pay VED too, I have a car.

You too could have a cycle and use the roads to dive on, or ride a horse. Them is the rules.

Yes - you pay for the car, but not the bicycle.

Therefore as a paying user - I get priority over cyclists

As do I and millions of other tax payers. Road are funded by general taxation.

Think of VED as a car tax NOT road tax.

You don't own the roads anymore than a cyclist. Well, I guess you can have the nice motorways all to yourself.

You get priority based upon the highway code - you have no automatic right to overtake unless the road is clear of on-coming traffic, you do not have the right to cross onto the wrong side of the road to pass parked traffic at the expense of making a cyclist move out of the way. As Davy says, them's the rules - we don't make them, just live by them.

If a cyclist breaks the rules by undertaking, jumping red lights and riding on the pavement they get punished, and so they should, but as long as they obey the highway code you have to respect their right of way.

Get over it.

Can't understand why you have to boast about riding two abreast on a country road. Are you doing it deliberately to cause more of an obstruction to motor vehicles which have a biggish speed differential to yours. What is the point of doing that, why make life more difficult for others on the road?

Why are you differentiating between a country road and a busy A road? The fact that you do indicates that you have an ulterior motive when it comes to a country road.

Are you actually trying to say that most cyclists are law abiding when it comes to the highway code, seriously, when exactly do the majorityof cyclists obey any of those rules!?!?!?!? I've never ever seen a cyclist stopping at a red light unless it was blatantly going to kill them to go through it, and even then I see some jumping the lights.
I see loads on the pavements, the police in this area do nothing.
I'm sure there are some who do obey all the rules but I see cyclists undertaking all the time as well.

OK, next there will be the "ok so do all drivers strictly follow the highway code?", the answer is no but I don't see quite the same numbers of drivers steaming through red lights etc.!

I commpletly agree with that - however granted not all do that.
My daughter has just passed her primary school cycling proficiency, and 2 nights ago she saw a cyclist go through a red light - she knew he wasn't supposed to do that and said so too.
Another thing the hard shoulder on a stretch of road I used has been turned into a cycle lane - so why do I still see them being a nuisance on the road?

I'm not boasting, but there is no law against it, and I like talking to my riding buddy.

Stupid question, you know the answer to that.

Do you walk (foot passenger) in the road? Do you pay tax or insurance to walk on the road? Do you think you should...I mean, you are using the roads after all.

Yeah, good to hear that your daughter is learning and recognising the correct rules of the road, seems far and few between nowadays!

I too see loads of cyclists near me who see to do anything to get in the way of motorists, when there are cycle lanes a few feet from them!
